It’s time for a bed upgrade. Divan frame has snapped. Nothing fruity. Me sitting down too clumsily on the end putting my socks on.

Wanting to go from a double up to a king. We currently have a knackered old mattress with a nice thick memory foam topper. It’s reasonably comfy. Topper can go on the spare bed.

Does anyone have any experience of these fancy new, quite thin memory foam mattresses? Simba, Emma etc. They seem quite expensive but most seem to have a 100 day guarantee?

Cheers in advance.

Bought our 2 king memory foam from Costco, both have been great can't remember for sure but think it was a Sealy - it had won some Which type review despite being one of the cheapest (it's one of the rolled up one's so you have to leave it come to for 24hrs before you use it).

Sure it was £130ish but that's a few years back now

We tried one, think a Tempur or something sounding like that, and while it was comfortable, i sweated profusely.

Mrs was fine.

The starting point is do you like the feel of a memory foam bed? I tried an Ergoflex (the Which Best Buy) & discovered I really didn't like MF mattresses. It went back after 30 days & I went for a Latex one instead which I've been happy with. I don't think there was anything wrong with the Ergoflex & I actually slept very well but I couldn't get on with the feeling of sinking into the mattress & how you have to roll out of the dip when you turn over.

There's £150 & a free protector offer on at the moment. You've nothing to lose in trying one as they all do 30 day (at least) money back trial periods.

We recently swapped from a 10 yr old quality mattress (cant remember the make) - had 3500 springs, super king size, memory foam topper, sprung base, one side soft, other firm (my wife likes a softer bed, i prefer firmer) and bought a new bed frame and an Emma Mattress.

Had it about 2 months now and love it. Dont find it too warm - as similar advertise, there is virtually no feel when one of us moves in the bed, ie, one can get up to use the bathroom without disturbing the other.

We did find it a little hard at first but asked for a free additional layer of foam which was delivered equally as speedily (two days) - just unzip the top section of the cover, place on (dont pull it around else it will rip) and zip the cover back on. Made a huge difference.

The Emma and others, do often have 30 & 40% off promotions, so maybe wait for one of them if you can.

My wife has a tempur pillow so I went for the Emma pillow - tried it for a week or so, found it far too firm, they suggested taking out one of the three layers of foam but that was then too thin for me - its reversible though, one side if firmer than the other, just that I found it too firm on either side. They accepted a return on this no fuss.....so assume that if we (not likely) decided to return the mattress, it would be equally fuss free.

Our original plan was to try the cheaper mattresses - Eve, Emma, Casper, Nectar etc, use their 100 night trials if needed and then if we didnt like any of them, shell out for a Tempur - but they are around £2k for a Super KS :yikes:

Before we committed, we did try some of them in the local bed shops - Simba is sold in Benson For Beds and Eve in Next etc.

Did read a thread (on here or reddit) that someone was wanting to return a boxed mattress (they didn't give the make) and they received a 'Free' £150 mattress protector as part of the purchase - that cost would not be refunded, ie, it was provided to keep the mattress clean if it was returned and the £150 was forfeited - so if you do go for any of them, ensure that they will allow a return if you dont use their additional mattress protector.

We are in the process of rejecting two Simba matts. Even were we not to replace them, sleeping on the bed slats would be more comfortable.

It’s worth popping into Bensons for beds if you have one nearby. We’ve had some good advice from them, contrary to the, “buy the one you like best Love” from John Lewis.

Beware mattress rating websites, they aren’t independent.

No connection to Bensons.

Well at least they are no longer owned by Steinhof, who had a £6bn accounting scandal, view tax as a 'risk' and are utter bds to deal with if you have a problem with a product.

Thanks all. They all seem to be doing 40% which is what peaked our interest. Spent the day trawling round all the shops today. It will be no surprise that what I liked, she didn’t. And vice versa..........

Tried to do it on the cheap last year with a Casper Essential and sent it back after a month or so. It was a bit too firm but the main issue was waking up in the night drenched in sweat.

When they were due to collect, the driver rang to say they'd run out of protective bags and we might not get our full refund if it got damaged in their van. I spoke to Casper customer service (who were excellent). They said that was bks, it would be based on the condition it left our house as you'd expect. We rearranged anyway, and they picked it up a few days later with no fuss.

We thought we'd try a hybrid instead, so a Leesa Hybrid arrived yesterday. Despite costing 2.5 times more, the buying experience was pretty rubbish compared to Casper. We couldn't pick a delivery day (amazing for such a large item), and it was sent by UPS who gave us no tracking info so the wife couldn't do anything until it turned up.

I'd say it's more comfortable than the cheap Casper, but I was still pretty warm so I'm not convinced yet. It may just be I'm not going to get on with the foam.

I bought one of their hybrids and haven't looked back.
Recommended to a mate and they love it too.

Its got a temperature regulating foam layer (apparently) which helps keep things cool.

The pillows look uncomfortable but now i got used to them i love them.

Short answer is - forget memory foam and strap-on gimmicks, buy latex. It just works: www.latexsense.co.uk

Purely based on reviews on here we have a John Ryan Bespoke arriving in a couple of weeks. Can’t wait. Hope I don’t have to return it as it is a lot of money to splash untested!

If your mattress feels warm in January that's a good indication you'll be in hell come August/September. MF mattresses are hot, everyone points this out. Try a latex mattress.

Yep. I'd never even heard of a latex mattress until this thread smile

I posted this on another bed thread a while ago but no one seemed to know the answer; why in the last couple of years has there been a plethora of memory foam mattress companies show up, all with their hip tv adverts featuring trendy young couples, such as Otto, Simba, Eve, Emma etc. Has a patent held by Tempur finished or something of that nature?

I bought a ludicrously priced devan from John Lewis about 15 years ago. It’s mainly latex to help with breathing and I’ve nevwr noticed it being worse than a sprung mattress. I’ve slept on memory foam mattresses at friends houses and you can definitely feel the difference.

Our mattress is long past it’s sell by date and I can’t say I’m looking forward to the hassle of finding something that has worked or lasted so well.

And just to reiterate something mentioned above, the comparison sites just sell you what they get paid out the most on. Alan the affiliate kid has not tested a single one but ranked them by his kick back.

Plus, before going down the route of buying one that you can return within x days, make sure you check and confirm with yourself that you are the type of consumer who will actually go to the effort and hassle of returning a mattress and getting another one delivered simultaneously. It’s a good model but it’s a marketing model and it works because the majority of people won’t return the mattress even if they don’t like it.
