We used to buy property in Lincolnshire. We had to be careful in Retford because things seemed unbelievable cheap. They weren't that's just Retford - faded glory.

It’s not a bad little town. The centre picked up recently.

I think Retford made its money from farming and coal didn't it? Is there anything economically that is likely to see its renaissance?

Not sure why it matters, house is far enough out of the centre that even if Retford collapsed and a zombie hoed arrived you’d be fine. You could say the same about any village from there to doncaster what the hell do they do out there who knows.

I’m not an expert of the economic merits of Retford seems a nice little place just like many others. We go there because there is a rather nice butcher and an Italian bakers that makes awesome cakes.

I am not knocking Retford. It was just weird when we were looking at big, handsome Georgian 4-bed townhouses for the price of a one bed flat in South London.

We were offered a Georgian house in an acre of land in New York, with a classic car collection included, for £500k once. That's New York Lincs obv. It had everything it desribed and we didn't buy it. Lincolnshire is a different planet.

Yes the property loads momentarily then disappears for me.
Thanks exactly what happens.

That part of the country does seem incredibly cheap

I briefly thought of buying there plus a small 1 bed flat in cheapish east London and commuting on Sunday night

Advert says:

"Northfield house has been comprehensively renovated by the current owners during the past 18 years to include rebuilding the chimney stacks, overhauling the roof and lead where required. The harling has been repaired and repainted and gutters and downpipes have been replaced where necessary and then painted. All windows have been carefully renovated and are in working order with working shutters. The plumbing has been either replaced or upgraded and the central heating system was installed in 2004 with a subsequent new condensing boiler in 2010. Wiring in the first, second and third floors was replaced during the renovations."

TLDR:

This place is falling apart and has been repaired on an as and when needed basis.
It functions, but only just.
Will set you back a small fortune every year.

Saw this while looking at houses in the local area.

Not my cup of tea, likely because I am getting old and miserable and there are too many stairs but would have loved it if I was still in my 20's / 30's.

Someone has put a lot of work into the place though.

I thought that too, then looked at the floor plans on Rightmove and they don't make much more sense.

They show ground to fifth floors in a single tower, but from the external photos/window placement it doesn't make much sense, not enough storeys.

Perhaps that's why there are no bedroom/bathroom photos - they don't have windows hehe

Unless the bedrooms are in the other tower, that would be pretty odd though.

Nice, 'lifestyled' to hell - the Study actually shows signs of life.

And £3m with a crap Tarmac drive?

Relatively easy to resolve, but no dining room.

There's two storeys for the ground level arch windows.

Floors 2 & 3 have little square windows either at ceiling or floor level.

Floor 4 doesn't seem to appear in the photos - but floor 5 does and it doesn't have windows (have to go on the roof for the views).

According to the blurb, the second tower only has two floors.

Edited - I got that wrong. Check out the floorplan and compare with the first pic. Floor 2 has a couple of windows at the front. Floors 3&4 have little windows.

I know the area well (grew up in Haslemere) and that is pretty much the arse end of town, which is why it's "only" £3 mm for almost 10k sqft.
If that was on Fernden Lane / Tennysons / Bunch it would be £5+ mm

I must be easily pleased, I like that. £3m doesn't seem silly money and the drive is a minor issue, no more so that decorating and constructing a proper triple garage instead of a draughty open barn.

You pays your money and takes your choice.

For that budget I would buy something that was a more manageable size, but still exceptionally roomy by national standards (say 3-4k sqft), on one of the nicer roads, walkable into Haslemere (not Hammer / Liphook etc) and the mainline station.

This is up for sale not far from where I grew up, I think belongs to the Halcrow group. Could be really rather nice with another few million spare to bring it up to date.
