I do cry a little inside when I see what people are burning, but sadly there are more wood burners than wood turners.
I've got some Hawthorn and Laburnum which are both lovely woods to turn, it's a pity it'll end up in the fire.

In other news, my chain sharpener arrived today. Why have I never had one of these before? It is awesome. Took 5 mins to sharpen my chain and it was so easy. I have messed about trying to sharpen them previously and reverted to just asking my dealer to do it now. Never again! Highly recommended.

Nice bit of cherry wood

With the Stihl file just be wary of the middle file which takes down the depth gauges/rakers. I tried one of these and they do a great job on the actual cutting teeth but found they took the depth gauges down too much, resulting in the saw pulling through the wood far too quickly. I ended up taking the central square file out and just keeping the two round files in place.

You may not want to read this! Log Pile #3, which was shown earlier in the thread, is now officially closed. The final load was about, er, three tonnes officer, of Cherry. Splits beautifully, lovely stuff.

We can’t go any higher because it is getting difficult to lob the logs up there. View from the the top:

First tarp is on at the far end, I need to order some more.

I will keep an eye out for this - cheers

It made the saws almost unusable, especially the saw I use when climbing.. it is an all or nothing sort of cut with the flat file in place.

I have one of those, too, but I use this: https://www.timberlinesharpener.com/shop/
Easy enough to file the depth separately

1.6m cubed of kiln dried oak was delivered today. It's a hell of a job to schlep it up four flights of stairs to the roof terrace but at least I didn't have to cut and season it.

Anyone have any experience of EGO chainsaws? I was originally looking at a Husqvarna 120i but have been recommended the EGO CS1800. Has an 18" bar, power equiv of a 45cc for £220 bare. Seems reasonable to me and haven't come across the brand before although reviews online are positive.
Thanks

Winch required! You're an electrical engineer, grab some pulleys and a motor...

I did look at some kind of gantry/pulley/winch system that could get the whole lot up to the terrace in one go if I had it delivered to the back of the house but it was vetoed by my husband at the first mention

Silver birch fell over in the local park, and the council let me chop bits off it to cure (see - even in London you can nab free wood). It'd obviously not great firewood, but it's free and works nicely for a short burst of high-flame fire when seasoned.

Little battery chainsaw worked pretty well on 30cm rounds, but you need a few spare batteries of you intend to do a whole tree...

We did get some council dweeb round a few years ago accusing us of running a wood business. I challenged him to find any that had been sold....

I’ve seen a few posts about seasoned wood delivered nationwide.

My local, reliable supplier in Wimborne (Dorset) won’t answer calls at all and I am needing to get a good 1/2 tonne delivery before next weekend.

I have tried two alternative local suppliers previously and they both delivered unseasoned wood which foamed and sulked in the burner rather than pumping out the heat like it should have done.

One guy was very pleasant and refunded me / replaced the load with kiln dried. He is no longer trading.

The other guy told me I’d got it wrong and that he was going to come round and ‘break my face you stuck up little c nut’ 👍.

So anyone got a recommendation for a home delivery service where the wood will definitely be seasoned and can get here quickly?

Thanks.

I had to take some chunky limbs off a silver birch a few years ago. Seasoned it for a year, it was excellent firewood.

As above, birch burns well.

My woodshed contains nothing but birch, pine and spruce - seasons quickly and gives out plenty of heat.
