Just looking to purchase a multi split from appliance direct (https://www.appliancesdirect.co.uk/p/iqool-2ms12k12k/tcl-iqool2ms12k12k-air-conditioner) and they want you to give f-gas installers details before processing the purchase.

I had planned to install myself (have installed units before, just not on my own house).
Is there a way around this without getting stung for install by an f-gas engineer?

That's pretty crazy, most of the people that buy these units will fit it themselves or with the unofficial help of a mate. It could be they are trying to promote the services of installers for a kickback but I doubt it will do them much good, there are quite a few different places that you can get them from.

I too was looking for an additional unit so I have just messaged them and asked them why they would prefer me to get one off E-Bay instead.

Yep, madness. Would be interested in what (if) they reply to you.

Just go for the R290 variant.

Or find someone else who'll take your money.

Not many R290 multi splits about - because it's propane based they want to establish that your room size isn't such that a leak would cause the refrigerant level in your room(s) to reach the lower explosive limit for propane in air.
Simple for a single unit which is 99% of the DIY market covered.
Try telling them you are a reseller and buy an F-gas one instead.

What’s happens if you select the ‘I will supply details later’ option ?

I bought my multi split from them and didn’t have to supply any details.

I tried to order from them with the give me a quote to install it, in the hope that they will send it too.

Nope. Held back for installers details. Their quote by the way after I had gone around the houses ended up being £1k to instal a single split.

Ended up being simplest to cancel my order but still need to find a system!

They process the payment but won’t deliver until confirmed.
To select the reseller option they want company details etc

Ok so this might just be a little naughty but ….

Select ‘im booking my own engineer’ and then In the bit where it asks for an F gas number, type in a 6-8 digit number starting with an F which is NOT and Fgas number, but it does give you a drop down list of engineers and let’s you proceed !!!

Yeah I can get the list of nearest f gas engineers but not sure what happens if I randomly choose one? Will they be notified etc? Do they get logged anywhere as installers of my system (in case anything goes wrong?)
Not really sure what to do!

Personally I’d just select one and leave it at that. You could always say the website suggested them (which in a way it did ) and you have chosen to use someone else.

It's fitted.

If it wasn't for working at height (Second floor) it would be a piece of piss to install. M

How much do pros charge for something like that? My cost was £660 all in, including a couple of tools I needed and the downpipe outside and trunking inside.

Did borrow a vacuum pump though, that would add £150ish to the job if I was buying.

My neighbour knocked on the door this afternoon to tell my pipework was raining on him laugh

Atleast I know the condensate drain is working properly.

Will have to run it to ground level or atleast below the fence line. The breeze must have been blowing it across into their garden.

You may not plan to, but if you use that unit in heat pump mode it will rain freezing water on him and all over your window as well

Just a random post regarding running costs

I have a 27kw multi split with 3x 9kw in door units. I ran all three units flat out all day to cool the entire house down and the meter shows it pulls around 500w with just one room on but only goes up to 1kw with all three rooms flat out. Total running cost is coming in at £1.50 per day at the moment. I have 3kw solar on the roof so in theory the AC is free to run on the hot sunny days when you want it and the solar is getting full sun all day.

My wife needs a split aircon unit fitted for year round heating/cooling in a ~30sqm outbuilding used for her business. The building is a brick built studio and reasonably well insulated with decent double glazing and loft insulation. I think it will be a simple install, the studio has it's own consumer unit with space on the bar if the unit is too juicy to be plugged in, there's space around the back for the outside unit to hang on the wall and only needs a 3-4m pipe runs to where the internal unit would be mounted on an external wall, so the condensate pipe can go straight back out and not require pumps etc.

We've had a quote to fit a 3.5kw Daikin FTXM35R for ~£1650 inc VAT from a local firm excluding electrics but she doesn't want to spend that kind of money so I started looking at alternatives including stuff mentioned here. I see that Cooleasy mentioned in this thread sell a 3.5kw easy fit Comfee unit for £500 and offer a commissioning service for £300 (they cover our area in Hants) which being less than half the cost of their install service I assume means I'd sort out the physical install mounting the units etc and they'd come in, check it over and connect up the gas pipework? Going this route works out under half the cost of the Daikin, so accepting the Daikin is probably a better quality unit and I'll have to do some donkey work it still seems a no brainer unless I'm missing something?

Atleast that bit is another 1.5m from the neighbours. I guess he's unlikely to be sat outside if it's cold enough to put the heating on.

I’ve been quoted £1560 all in for a Panasonic split system for a similar sized garden room.

In answer to both your and Andeh's questions - there is a risk of unexpected "add-ons" - if the commissioning engineer finds some crucial work that needs done, he's going to have you over a barrel for whatever he wants to do.
Andeh - are the Ebay guys actually F-gas registered, or just handymen who will fit the unit? Anyone DIY minded can do it themselves with no or minimal spend on tools, and the units very rarely fail - think of how many they bang out of the factory under various badges every year.
