I would get a fake woodburning stove, one that runs on mains gas
Change the mantlepiece for an oak look one and consign "LOVE" to the garage or better still charity shop
If your a cyclist change the order to "velo" and stick it in the garage.

For the fire you need to work out what's behind the fire, BUT for a quicl makeover just paint all that hideous Brick white or something,
What's worse is the letters light up!

I think a paint job on the bricks is definitely the first thing to do then go from there.
I must say I do like the look of this, but now we're talking silly money: https://www.stovesareus.co.uk/gazco-studio-3-glass...

Isn't the colour-de-jour something like anthracite-fking-grey.

Slap a coat of that all over and have it look like somthing from a TV show! biggrin

if you inset a contrasting black stove and change the mantle no need to paint the bricks, it will look nasty painted

For the (relativity) quick fix, I’d skim over the brickwork, paint it room or contrasting colour and paint the woodwork white.

We have just ordered two fireplace changes. The first is simply updating some tiled surround on a real-wood fireplace with granite. The other is an aging gas fire updated to a glass fronted gas burner, surrounded with slate. Our local fire shop had masses of options. We kept our wooden mantles and just updated everything else.
