Can anyone recommend a carpet underlay on a budget to minimise noisy squeaky floorboards in a childs bedroom?

I'm looking at this in 12mm:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/8mm-10mm-12mm-Thick-PU-...

I'll lay the underlay and grips myself and get Tapi carpets for the carpet and pay their fitter 50 quid to fit.

Personally I always use Cloud 9 11mm.

Underlay isn't really going to help squeaky floorboards though.

When fitting your own grippers, is there a specific gap size required between the gripper and the skirting, for tucking the carpet into, or is no gap needed?

I've used the purple 12mm for a rental. Laid it out and stapled it down easy enough. Been fine for a couple of years. When the tenants left, there were no indents from their furniture.

I've fitted the last few rooms worth off carpets here.

It was reasonably easy, I'm nothing like as quick as a pro, but it is easier timing wise in that you don't have to book holiday for a weekday fitting.

Gripper and underlay are much cheaper online. And we usually do a curcuit of the shops till we find something we like. End of rolls don't usually work out any cheaper unless they have the exact size you want.

Screw the boards down.

The gap is proportional to the thickness of the carpet. I managed to work that out and I'm not a carpet fitter!

Our wool carpet didn't last brilliantly especially when the cats sick on it and people spill stuff. I'd rather replace them at 5 years for the cost
Really?
I’ve had mine down 12 years, it’s had puppy poo on it, puppy pee, dog sick ... bit of a pattern there! A full bottle of red wine spilt on it, I’ll blame the dog for that too. whistle It’s a very light coloured carpet and has needed a bit of help with Vanish carpet cleaner but after a few vacuums it generally comes up like new. There have been stains I thought would never, ever disappear and it’s like the wool just soaks it all up.

Mine seems fairly resilient - except to carpet moths which love it... organic marks fade away after a while.

Professional carpet cleaning will get pretty much all crud out of it.

I had Tapi carpets come and measure up my house a week or so ago.
The whole ground floor will be luxury vinyl, with 4 bedrooms upstairs carpeted.
The carpet we want is about £35sq m, and my basic calculations suggest I have around 60sq m in the 4 bedrooms.
The quote they sent me suddenly shot up to about £65 sq m! I am going to call them at some point to get them to explain how it has got so expensive when the carpet itself is £35, but it does seem like buying the carpet, underlay etc myself and simply having someone fit it would be a much more cost effective way to do it!

Seems like even if they're ripping you off marking up to the tune of £10 per sqm for underlay, that's a fitting (which I guess needs to include grippers and door bars) of £20 a sq m. Is that reasonable? I don't actually know. Does the trade actually have a fixed price per sqm to fit carpet (incl gripper and bars)? (I know some will look at the car you you have on their drive, look at their current jobs and pluck a stupid price from the air, but you can say that about any trade)

I should have mentioned, they put fitting as an extra cost outside of the above, and it was reasonable at about £275, but that then makes the jump from £35sq m to £65sq m even more confusing, as that isn't actually including a fitting cost.
Oh, and ANOTHER thing I didn't mention, their quote was based on the grippers currently there holding the current carpet being left and re-used!

I've had someone else come round and measure up, so I'm waiting to see what he thinks he can do in terms of cost, hopefully it'll be a fair whack cheaper and I can just go with him. I might still call Tapi anyway and see what they say when I put it to them that the cost really does seem to be a lot higher than I would have thought.

Anywhere that doesn't give me transparency on costs gets no money from me. I'm happy to pay for a good job though. Ask them to clarify why that increase of £30 a sqm is made of? Some will be underlay obs but really good stuff is only £5/6 a m.

Google suggests door bars and gripper are peanuts (£5 a door bar and £50 for 150m of decent gripper)

Yeah exactly what I thought, buying that stuff myself would cost very little, so again can't justify the jump in costs here

The quote doesn't really break down the amounts of carpet required per room either, they've just put 5m or 4m against a room. So that's pretty vague isn't it.

Anyway, no rush, we're a long way off the point of installing carpets, but it's a bit frustrating that you can't just trust a quote to come through as the best price you're going to get without questioning it etc

It is, but it all dependent on the most efficient use of a 4 or 5m roll and the total length they estimate. Bottom line is that any place you go to, you'll need to get someone to measure up for you and they calculate the requirement in total that includes wastage. I'd definitely get 3 quotes in first to see what meterage they all claim you'll need and see how that varies.

Issue with carpet is predominantly fixed width do your always chucking money away in off cuts unless you have a perfectly straight 4m or 5m wide room also if your having hall and stairs and landings they can cost a fortune in waste if they don't nest the pieces properly

Good points above. Here's a floor plan of the four bedrooms, don't know what you reckon re: wastage
