Any advice on the best seed to put down for a new lawn? South east. Roughly 409sqm to cover. One large tree smack in the middle of the lawn so some shade but not much. Gets sun from around 8am to 6pm daily. Needs to be semi hard wearing & weed resistant if that’s a thing?
This is mine, reseeded last year with Lawnsmith Classic seed. Gets plenty of wear with 2 maniac children running around constantly.

Perfect thanks, that’s me sold! Lovely looking lawn!

Thanks to this thread, I took the plunge and scarified/overseeded a couple of months back. The cold weather meant a scary lack of grass. Things are getting there though...

Getting there!

Huge difference! Good job. Keep cutting it nice and short now and it will thicken up a treat.

Hi,

Lawn newbie here. I have a weed spread throughout my lawn and looking for advice on identifying and killing it. The weed grows outwards along the ground and looks like a vine. It's a pain to pull out because it spreads around and is everywhere. As it is close to the ground the lawn mower doesn't get it, it only removes it's flowers/leaves.

Any idea what it is and how I kill it - preferably without also killing the lawn?

That's clover. Regularly pulling it out will weaken it, and strongly growing grass will help crowd it out to some extent. However, it is pernicious. Dicamba or micoprop-P weedkillers will attack it, and they can be found in lawn friendly products.

As above its clover, we use resolva in the green bottle on it, kills it dead saves the grass.

Clover is pretty useful in a lawn. It fixes nitrogen which is great for green growth, it's pretty soft under foot, and if you mix in micro clover the flowers are quite low growing.

Thanks! It has been at least 40 years since it had any attention other than mowing and the odd feed.

I’ve gone full anti bird today and netted the grass approx 30m2.

Chucked some more seed down so hopefully in two weeks the patchiness will have gone and the nice green lawn returned.

I don’t know If I was overwatering the last time i seeded (leaving sprinklers on for 15 mins a time) or the birds were having a feast but I’ve not had much joy as of late

I find polythene amazing to help germination without excess water, but I've just had my first dose of 'too got under there' with this mad week of heat, during which we where away on holiday. Heyho. Some has taken!

Yep, I've got lots this year, it blows in on the wind and with birds... I suppose on the basis that it's an annual meadow grass it dies off each winter. I hope there's less next year. frown

The hot, dry weather we're having stresses poa to the point that it starts producing seed heads in abundance, preparing offspring to follow its presumed imminent death. So you've probably got lots of those! Rake them to stand them up and then cut on the short side to make sure you get as many as you can. Then water, if no rain is forecast, to help recovery.

Anyone know what this weed is growing in my lawn and what's the best method of removing?

I have quite a few of them and would rather use a weed killer suitable for lawns rather than pulling them out if such a product exists.

Looks like plantain, hamsters love it, either of the two Lawn weed killers will treat it.

Update: I went ahead and had a go at turfing the newly top soiled section from a few posts ago.

It was a lot of effort digging out the old clay soil to properly level it. I did it in the baking sun yesterday!

Essentially I had to shuffle a lot of the soil about as it compacted a lot. I also dug out a lot of the clay and laid fresh top soil down.

I fertilised the soil with growmore the night before.

Here’s the finished result from yesterday. I’ll post more pics up in a week or two. But as a newbie, I’m over the moon with the result!

Fast forward a couple of weeks, and two cuts and here’s how it’s looking now!

I’m over the moon with how nicely it’s settled. It’s surpassed my expectations!

You really need to love cutting grass to buy a computer game all about mowing lawns.
