Hi all. We're coming into the new car season and I thought we could use a thread for the cars when they appear. Most will be similar to last year, but McLaren, Ferrari and Aston Martin all seem to be saying that there will be plenty new to look at.

Here's the team launch dates as announced so far:

Haas won't be able to do the first fire up of their engines until the Bahrain test, because of Covid isolation periods and the engines needing Ferrari techs to travel from Italy to do it at the Haas base. https://www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.covid-r...

That’s a weird one for them. They used to build up the new car at Dallara in Italy, who build the chassis, but elected this year to do it in the UK as the chassis is almost unchanged.

The Ferrari engine techs don’t have time in the schedule to quarantine in the UK, and presumably can’t get the UK team to Italy without the same issues, so they’ll have to do the fire-up and shakedown with everyone in Bahrain.

Sadly, one of the difficulties in having the team spread over so many facilities. Good luck to them, in what’s likely to be another underwhelming season. Hope they’ve got some sponsors’ names on the car, there’s weren’t many other than Haas Automation last year, Gene can’t bankroll an F1 team forever.

ScarbsF1 is starting to pick up on changes to the cars for 2021. Ferrari airbox

"Quite obvious that Ferrari are going bigger on 2021s big trend 'centreline cooling'.
Added inlets around the roll structure feed coolers behind the engine.
A neat legal way to work around the homologation rules. Allows for slimmer sidepods."

I'd assume that's why Mazepin is in the car.

Well he isn’t there because he’s the fastest driver available, that’s for sure.

We’re coming into a new season with so many suggestions as to how things may be changed. Salaries come into discussion so why don’t we have a maximum salary for a F1 driver from his or her team including sponsors deals and then they can make up their salary from other championship races, ie. Indy, Le Mans, BYCV, etc.
Graham Hill and Jim Clarke had to, so why not Lewis ?

Thanks Tazar, although we're aiming for a slightly anorak/nerdy 2021 new car discussion here hehe

So McLaren are going to be first to launch tomorrow, with what’s almost certain to be the most changed car on the grid, having moved PU supplier from Renault to Mercedes over the winter.

I suspect it will also be the most changed car between its launch and the first race, as they shake it down then go testing, and gain a much better understanding of it.

Don’t think so, same papaya orange with maybe a few more sponsors.

Expecting a whole new back end though.

A back end that looks remarkably similar to last year’s Mercedes, by any chance?

They apparently spent tens of millions on that horizontal rear suspension last year, I’d be amazed if McLaren, Williams and Racing Point don’t all have a version of it on the ‘21 car.

Will be too early for Williams- still using it's own (outdated) gearbox in 2021. Aston and McLaren's rears will be near identical to last year's Merc I should imagine.

You can only hope mclaren have done something with the paintjob. They are consistantly the dullest looking car on the grid. That orange does not work very well at all.
Last good one was the thunderbirds one a few years back. But the car was so slow it got tainted by association.

The colour orange and word dull don't really work.

I love the orange McLaren, it's really striking and certainly stands out, anyway papaya orange is McLarens colour.

Livery design has been very poor for years now, BTCC/F1 etc have had some decent liveries over the years but not very often anymore.

You might need to change the colour settings on your TV if an orange Mclaren looks dull

Which McLaren are you looking at? Their orange is one of the standouts on the grid!
