Brabus 3.6S Lightweight for sale

The one-off recreation built 20 years after the original isn't cheap - but it is spectacular

Beyond its three-pointed star and four wheels, the Brabus 3.6S Lightweight was not like any Brabus Mercedes introduced before or since its 1988 launch. The 'Lightweight' bit of the name is the key reason why; Brabus has - and surely always will - be known for powerfully built 'bahnstormers, cars as monstrously powerful as they are decadently opulent. Stripped-out track specials are the kind of thing they leave to other, lesser tuners.

But it wasn't always like that. In 1984 Brabus founder Bodo collaborated with SIXT Rental to create 200 Mercedes 190Es with a range of performance upgrades (no, seriously). The ambition was three-fold: first was to create a better performance version of the W201 than the 2.3 16v, second was to give SIXT a USP in the rental market and, of course, to better show off what Brabus was capable of. Buoyed by the popularity of the SIXT project, Bodo went several steps further in 1988 and created a properly hardcore 190E, packing more than 250hp from an enlarged straight six as well as a raft of other performance-enhancing upgrades - including no back seat.

Unsurprisingly, customers didn't really buy into the oxymoronic idea of a pared-back Brabus, and its take on the 190E would become the more traditional '3.6-24', with rear seats and amenities reinstated. But the Lightweight had made an impression, and so in 2008 then PR Director of Brabus, Sven Gramm, commissioned a recreation of the 190 Lightweight.

This is that car. Originally a one-owner 190E 2.6 manual sourced locally to Brabus, it was subjected to a ten-month overhaul to create the 3.6S Lightweight homage. The M103 straight-six was bored and stroked for the extra capacity and almost 300hp. That was in addition to new suspension, the lovely Kevlar-backed Recaro seats, the roll cage and the wheels amongst a whole host of changes. Understandably pleased with what had been created, Gramm used the car for a period before selling it in 2016; it was first registered in the UK in 2017, shown at Mercedes-Benz World and then, well, not really driven very much at all. You may well have seen it offered before.

Which is a crying shame, really, because a bespoke Brabus 190E build with this much power and potential promises to be an incredible experience. The price is no doubt a sticking point, because £100k is a huge amount of money for any kind of 190E; unique Brabus project the Lightweight may well be, but it's neither the original concept vehicle nor one of the Mercedes-built 190E Evo homologations. It is faster though, apparently, and it's hard not to admire the dedication and attention to detail that saw this project come to fruition. Because the world is certainly a better place with this Signal Red 190E in it. Let's hope a new buyer sees the appeal, and it's back out on the road very soon.

Interesting, I never knew it existed.

Bright red probably wasn’t the best colour for a 190, and the red grille adds to the rather 1980’s “tuning” look.

I’m actually more intrigued by the SIXT cars.

In the days of £11k Rover 25's, I think this is a bargain. And even without the Rover, I STILL think this is a very reasonable price for what it is - the level of engineering and attention to detail looks fantastic. Can't believe I'm saying this (as it's still a ridiculous amount in the real world!), but £100k is nothing for an interesting motor these days.

I owned a 190E 2.6 a few years ago. By far one of the best built cars I've owned and been in. I never knew the Brabus 3.6S model existed but looks the part.

Interesting car but I'd rather have the 5TCR and a 128Ti with the change.

Never knew about this, C36 from AMG for the following model version yes but not this one. Wonder if this was the inspiration..?

Never underestimate the domestic German tuners to have done wildly expensive things to BMWs and Mercs over the years only for most of them to have been sat in collections and surface only periodically - its what has led us to the current AMG domination of the MB range...

I bet there is some interesting cars in their history we still don't know about. I still love the look of the Sacco 190s and would have a 2.5 Cosworth in shot

An interesting car but not sure about the colour. It also looks like a multitude of tuner cars from the midlands.

I really like it & 100k for it doesn't seem to strong, I bet it cost more than that to do the conversion in the first place, Brabus do period correct restorations & they're not cheap but they are good.

That looks brilliant, and would spend 100 grand on that over a 100 grand on a new merc any day!

I’m sure it’s the genuine article, but you know when someone sticks a M3 badge on the rear of a 318i, I can’t help thinking that this looks like a Halfords job with a Brabus badge stuck on smile . Oh, and as for those side bolsters, never seen them so high biggrin

It is very of its time, and a lot of AMG of this era were equally garish, I confess never to my taste but then I think a Merc should have a star on the bonnet so I am way off base these days.

Yes a more restrained colour would make it better so am I condemning a car just because of its colour despite its obvious merits? I think yes - compared with newer cars it won't be that good and its lack of elegance or purpose due to colour means the reason for many old cars finding homes has gone.

Lovely, although this one has been for sale for a long time I think. There’s a PH-we who owns one of these, been a favourite car of mine on here

There was an AMG 3.2 offered for sale a few years ago at what seemed like very reasonable money (c. £20k IIRC), and got snapped up fast

That just looks so right - I’ve interesting to know what other colours it came in as I’d wager some other colours look even better.

Another posted said about £11k for old Rover 25’s WTAF that’s utterly insane.

Agreed, I don't see the appeal of this and it looks more shed than 100K!

Yeah, hadn't heard of it until now, am sure with 100 grand you could build something pretty special using whatever engine, motorsport parts and do something bespoke, never really been all that into the Brabus thing and red with black wheels, just looks a bit 90s rude boy.
