This just round the corner from me. It's an impressive house in a lovely position but whilst the fireplaces are beautiful the rest of the interior should be reconsidered. (call me. smile )

Sold for 1.95 million in 2018, now 3.1

Not keen on the kitchen/family room, but other than that a few cans of emulsion & some new carpets and curtains should sort it out.

Whilst I'd agree, the opportunity to have Loughran's eye and craftsmanship running through the interior would elevate it to something really incredibly special.

What would be an appropriate amount to spend on curtains in a place like this? I hear they can be quite expensive.

Like most of these big houses, the (housekeeper's?) cottage alone would do me just fine.

I realise I may be letting the side down a bit, but who or what are Loughran's?

Loughran is the poster who originally posted this house.

If you go into the woodwork thread, you can see some of his work (joinery, cabinet making, kitchens, etc.) - and it's absolutely world class.

Good looking driveway (penultimate photo)
Great house, but Michelin Cup 2's on a gravel driveway that long would mean I'd have to add 30 mins on to every journey.

It's very nice, but the main house is less than 3000sqft and £3.1 million is a lot even in Harrogate for that sq footage, the cottage and garage is basically the same again but I think most would want more space in the main house at that price level.

Lovely all the same.

My thinking too. I thought "what a lovely little place" until I clicked on the link and saw 6,000sq ft+

Suspect people would be looking at that perhaps with a view to running some sort of AirBnB.

You can't price a house on cost per sqft when you are paying for views, construction type (stunning old house) etc. IMO.
I think that only works in London for pretty normal types of properties.

You can look at a small castle and a modern box - the size might be the same but the property is what you are paying for

Oh I agree the price is definitely a case of finger in the air by the estate agent, £3.1 million when the main house is 2900sqft with "only" 1.5 acres is a lot, well over £1000 a sqft, your market will be smaller due to the foot print being split 45/55.

The garden is another niggle in that it all leads down to the road, your back garden is also your front garden due to the orientation of the house, lovely home/area though and it will be perfect for someone and lucky them!

Yes, we have a large front garden and a normal ish rear but some people would be put off that the majority of the land it at the front, the front is south facing and has a pool so we only ever use the front. It is completely surrounded by 20ft high laurel hedges but I know some people would be put off by it.

Obviously it would be location dependent for me, but in the right setting, that wouldn't put me off.

In fact, despite having front, rear and side gardens, our front garden is also our main garden.

Price is a bit optimistic, but Oban has been an epicentre of stupid prices of late so perhaps it's me out of touch.
Re the price being optimistic - it's gone SSTC within a week. I'm not surprised in the slightest, it's a goldilocks property & location combination, imo.

Depressing though, long gone are the days of proper bargains up there.
