Trades daily rates

They seem to have risen considerably over the last couple of years.

I have no problem paying decent money to competent folk who do a good job.

I would be interested to know what people are paying for trades now. Here in SW England nobody who is any good charges much less than £200-250 a day.

Plumbers and Electricians seem to be the most expensive, Decorators the cheapest.

Well very simply someone who lives in Mid Wales or Newcastle is going to have a significantly less living expenses for housing than someone living in Surrey, therefore the money earned will reflect that as with any profession. I would assume for the south east, excluding London an average £200-380 plus vat per day for trades depending on what they do, towards business running costs, with an expectation of 60-80% net amount of that being profit, as I assume the question is more on what people charge than what they earn.

£50 an hour is not bad going for a person who has the correct tools to do the job.
Most people wouldnt get out of bed for £20 an hour in any office based profession.

£20 per hour is a salary of around £39000

I suspect that a lot of office jobs are paying only just over half that, i.e. just above National Minimum Wage

Trades people are somewhat more skilled than the average admin temp though.

Mate who's an electrician in the West Midlands is £35/hr or £300/day on day rate. Best earner for him is taking on day rate jobs and paying his subby £150/day.

I worked as a painter's lad/assistant when young on big posh houses in London in the late 70s.

I've always painted the interiors of wherever I lived and do a bloody good job, if I say so myself

£300 a day!

I'm in the wrong job. Maybe time to get some cards sorted. Good way of surviving my retirement in a few years time.

How much would you expect to get painted for £300?

Me, doing my own place, I would take maybe 2 days for a small lounge or big bedroom.

Clean walls and woodwork, sort any small holes. Two coats on walls minimum, same for ceiling.

Hope the weather/room is warm enough to dry the first coat giving you time to apply the second.

But that usually takes me to far later than the usual guy would stay. He needs to be in the pub by 5pm

Next day for the woodwork. Sand old paint, primer/undercoat then gloss. Then it might need a second coat.

Anyway of doing it quicker without affecting the quality?

Nope. And the last guys I spoke to were a 5-6 month wait too.

Bathroom fitter, 7-8 month wait.

Had someone round to quote to do some tiling in a small en suite, 2 days work, £830 excluding grout, trims and tiles.

My mate has just gone self-employed, he fits bathrooms, kitchens and also any type of joinery. He wants to try to make £200 a day. This is in the North-East.

Bathroom fitter / tiler: £250 per day
Electrician: £40 an hour
Plumber: £30 an hour

Blimey. Good electricians and plumbers were charging £250 a day 10 years ago.

That now seems to be £300 minimum.

People are then surprised when prices for some jobs shoot up, and grandma can't get the care she needs...
