Did it look a bit like this? (Drilling for water, previously had a man walking around with diving sticks).

Something like that, it's own appliance though, not powered by a tractor.

I used to be the man doing the measuring, I would have told you it was the site for a new prison, secure hospital, motorway, industrial estate, recycling plant, sewage works, in fact any old guff that would be likely to enrage the local gossips.

Normally we were simply locating underground services.

Good Luck!
Ha, yup, done the same. Asylum seeker hotel, mental hospital, high security prison, traveller camp, pesticide control area - done all of those, mostly where the farmer was having a mobile phone mast installed in the far corner of the field a couple of hundred metres away from the nearest house.

Yep, most are tracked beasts, this one was home grown apparently. Anyway, it’s for a bore hole, farmers use a lot of water so having “free” water helps them a lot.

Hopefully it was on of those and not a core sampling machine (I had that done at my last place by developers and it was a much smaller machine).

Are they going to build houses on the field?

Looking at the latest immigration figures, cost of housing etc, etc I think the answer is yes they are going to build houses on the field. Not just the OPs but every fking field.

Several years ago a mobile drill rig was used on a field to test bore for coal deposits not far from where there used to be a big open cast mine. There was a possibilty of an new open cast mine. The vehicle was a truck with the rig on it. I was watching them drill during our archery club sessions. No smoking due to methane escaping, went down hundreds of feet. A hole approx 6-8" made. The farmer had sold the farm and eventually moved. No mine was put there, it's still a working farm.
Interesting that a tractor is being used rather than a truck set up as a mobile rig.
Check your planning dept.

As above, could well be drilling for water rather taking core samples. Are you on a mains supply or private?

Very funny!!!
Hilarious.
And when Gladys the concerned homeowner has a heart attack it'll be even funnier.

Show me a map of the village with the field marked, and ideally identify the field and I can tell you the likelihood of it being for housing.

No it'll be a mixed development offering retail opportunity and on site hybrid working and living space for the up and coming young couples in a series of 10 storey 1 bed apartments. Due to its eco credentials there will be no parking provided so the OPs road will offer these new residents, workers and customers the parking required.

Have you got any rare newts you can persuade into living in the field?

There are organisations out there who specialise in finding stuff which might halt any building works.

We have a chunk of land, approx 1sq mile being 'discussed' it'll be a huge development if it comes off.

There's 2 planned mega developments near my little town trying to get approval at the moment. 5250 on one side and 3500 on the other side. No plans to build any more doctors surgeries, road infrastructure or the like. There is only 14,000 homes here as it is! Madness

Have a look on your local planning portal, most have a map you can zoom in on, set the time line to forever, normally default to the last few months. If there is a planning application typically a red line around the area and you can click it to get the property ID and further info.
Also get hold of the council's Local Plan. They have a statutory obligation to identify the location of future housing. If a planning application is received within one of those areas, it will likely be passed no matter what. These plans are detailed - down to the level of individual fields and individual plots for infill. Doesn't matter whether or not anyone is currently wanting to build in those locations, the councils just have to prove that they have somewhere to put all the people in the next 5, 10, 15 years.

There will be an artist's impression of the 'development', and it won't resemble in any way the finished product. It will be called summer meadows, and the irony will sadly escape all but those who care.
