Last year my borders were full of ground elder and it chocked every plant. I tried every sort of nasty poison, pulling it up and birning it to no avail. I considered taking out all the border plants, skipping the soil and starting afresh.

Then a friend suggested Roundup and although I have had to go out every day and spray the fecking stuff as soon as it shows its head, I think that victory is mine as I have seen nothing for a week now!

Good to hear that the advice I've been dishing out since 1987 still works!

Dammit I was expecting this thread to be about cat traps.

You are not a Round-Up salesman are you? It has done an incredible job. Nothing else would touch it without obliteraing the whole garden and damaging the soil. Hopefully now the root system will rot down.

No, glyphosate was a Monsanto patent and licensed to Murphy (later taken over by Fisons). I was with May & Baker and people would write in asking what would kill ground elder etc. We had nothing translocated and I couldn't really promote Tumbleweed (the diluted retail version of Roundup) so I had to say 'proprietary weedkiller based on glyphosate'. The secretaries quickly adopted it as a standard letter!

NB: There's now a similar product called glufosinate-ammonium, which I believe works a bit quicker, but not sure.

Well it certainly does the job.
