Oooooooooooh, I used one of those when we rippped out and installed my mates new bathroom a few years back, neither of us had any experience at all but it turned out OK. That tool was one of the most useful things known to man I do believe.

Maybe I'm missing something but you don't need to turn the water off. Tie up the ballcock in the cistern, flush the bog and scoop out the rest with a cup.

If you can't remove or tighten the nut, dry both sides thoroughly then coat liberally inside and out with a well-known epoxy resin. Yes it's s bodge, and yes it will work.
