It's Caturday- Post some cats (vol 3)
Discussion
Making the most of the weather, Mercury - 17 years old and now 6 months since he had a stroke - decides it's time for a drink from our daughter's paddling pool.
Bearing in mind his eyesight isn't great (he bumps into things a lot these days), he seemingly had no difficulty managing to find the water, balance and get himself back onto the grass. He even looked rather pleased with himself.
I'm particularly pleased that I clipped his claws a few days ago. He doesn't sharpen / shed his claws on wood anymore and he was getting caught in the carpet and on our clothes. They would have gone straight through the pool plastic, I think.

Excellent picture! My daughter had a cat who would pat the water surface with her paw before drinking to (I assume) make it ripple. It's hard to tell where the surface of still water is, but disturb it and you can tell.Bearing in mind his eyesight isn't great (he bumps into things a lot these days), he seemingly had no difficulty managing to find the water, balance and get himself back onto the grass. He's drinking the water at that point. No idea how he found the surface so easily, or how he managed to balance himself so well.
I'm not sure what other owners' experiences are of their older cats, but we always get to the point with Mercury where we think he's past doing brave stuff and then he goes and does something that we didn't think was possible.
This is one of those moments. They are becoming fewer, though.

Our old boy had a stroke, went completely blind, and lived another 3 years... Hope you get many more years with Mercury

Don't forget, you probably only see about 25% of those moments anyway. So don't be too downbeat.I'm not sure what other owners' experiences are of their older cats, but we always get to the point with Mercury where we think he's past doing brave stuff and then he goes and does something that we didn't think was possible.

Ours managed to fall off the sink the other day, she's only 9 bless her. Heard an almighty thump & the cat was spread eagle on the floor. She must have hit her head as she was staggering around until her big brother went to see what all the fuss was about. She then proceeded to chase him down stairs (riding his back) before nicking his food.
He looks an interesting chap. Hope he continues enjoying the pool water for many a year to come!
I caught him at it again today. Fresh water this morning after I was sat in the pool yesterday cooling down after flap-sanding some bricks.
You can see the ripples from his lapping tongue this time. And another satisfied walk once replete.
Just to point out that he is given a full bowl of fresh water every day but seems to prefer lapping out of plant pots, etc when opportunities arise.

Hi all,
I appreciate there's no official measure, or even consensus on the matter, but I'm pretty sure we are now officially "Mad Cat People".
This is Lucy, who became the fifth addition to our family of 'small furryasshats people' - her previous potential adopter was binned off after proving themselves unsuitable
She's almost 12 weeks old and has just reached that stage where everything is a toy, fingers are for chewing and all legs are for climbing That said, she's utterly adorable and very well socialised (unsurprising as she was born into a household with two toddlers). She's settled in very quickly and is happy to sleep on our laps purring her little heart out
As she's just been separated from her mum and brothers, we didn't like to leave her alone for too long and thought having company would help, so we started a careful introduction plan with the other four cats. However, this isn't quite going to plan - the other cats are behaving like we've dropped an alien in their midst and seem to be scared of her. I'm sure things will sort themselves out over the coming weeks, but I strongly suspect she's going to end up as boss cat. It will be interesting to see how the power struggle with the current title holder plays out

It’s with great sadness I had to have my eldest cat Spider PTS last night, at almost 17. Missing her so much and keep opening the door in hope of seeing her. She was my eldest son’s best friend, was older than my youngest and came to us as a kitten when my middle son was a baby. Spider sleep with my boys as babies, curled up on their bouncers, then steal food from their high chairs and little hands as toddlers. She comforted my eldest through troubled years.
I swear she was purring even after her heart stopped beating. She looked free, almost happy that she could chase the birds again, dropping them on the rug at 3am for me to stand barefoot in. Lining up families of rodents in proud fashion on the doorstep. I’ll miss her posing in the sun on my car, jumping in through the bathroom window (often with gifts), rolling on the drive in front of me as a carefully pull in petrified I’m driving over her, sitting on a step giving me shade and waiting to trip me up, and the dogs will miss her terrorising them and stealing their food.
RIP Spider Cat. Play safe and happy.

Sorry to hear that Gretchen. The vet told us this week that our 13 y.o. Boris may not have long left as he has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (enlarged heart and congestive heart disease). He's on diuretics and blood thinners to manage the condition, but we're told his heart is "on a knife edge" and he could go suddenly at any time. It's up to us to make him as happy as we can for what time he has. He's oblivious of the facts, of course, and he's just pleased that his breathing is better now he's excreted much of the fluid that had accumulated in his abdomen.
