It's Caturday- Post some cats (vol 3)
Discussion
Firstly, having lurked on this thread for a very long time I'd like to say thank you to everyone who has actually been posting as your pictures have been great. So great, in fact, that on Sunday i'll be picking up Bob:
And Violet (head poking out of the orange thing). Free internet points for those who realise where i got the names from!
I've always loved cats but never got round to actually owning them. However, when a friend of that family's cat had kittens, I figured it was now or never. The most immediate downside of that though is that it's a 3hr drive home at best and I've been conscious from the start that that's a long way to travel with 8 week old kittens (I would have liked to leave them with their mother longer, but the owner wasn't keen). I have a large cat carrier that's designed for two adult cats so space won't be a problem. However, unscheduled toilet breaks on their part might be. If anyone has any tips on how to make their journey as pleasant as possible, in particular what to put in the carrier with them, I'd be very grateful. In return, i'll post up more kitten pictures when they're home

Aaaaawwwwwwww! They are adorable
You could get a cheap dog cage from Aldi and put bed, food and a little poop tray in it for them. Then stop every hour to check. Depends on if your car would accommodate?

All these photos of Jake look pretty normal and unremarkable...until you realize that they are taken in our neighbors house when he’s let himself in and made himself comfortable
I know what you mean, "our cat" is actually the neighbours from 3 doors down, he's always wandering in and making himself at home. We never know where he'll turn up next! In the bathroom getting ready for work this morning and hear all sorts of squawking outside… then hear the cat flap bang open.
I go downstairs and the kitten has a bird (decent size)… I think it’s dead, but she drops it and it immediately flys in to the front window in a bid to escape…. Kitten chases it, leaps on a coffee table and launches itself up the window, grabs it and crashes back down behind a chair in the bay, where the bird escapes again… and manages to get under a couch.
I then lift the couch up (it weighs a ton!), and the bird manages to get inside the sofa bed mechanism… so I have to strip everything down to get it out… do this, can’t find it, then all of a sudden it flys out of the couch, straight past my head and out of the back door (I’d opened it a few minutes earlier)… kitten was still looking for it when I left.
Bloody cat.

Thanks! I have a Focus so there's a fair amount of space in there, but not exactly Volvo estate territory. Putting bits like in that in the box would make sense, I just hope i don't have to brake hard or swerve or things will get messy. Fortunately there're a lot of service stations on the way back. You'll be fine... cats are pretty resilient things!! 12 years ago I was taking my boy to the vets to have some stitches removed and I had a head on crash... I woke up in the back of an ambulance, sirens blaring, strapped to a back/neck brace. Apparently, my 1st words were 'where is my cat?'... the paramedic told me the police had attended, and found him sitting on the passenger seat, looking a bit dazed, with the remains of his cat basket spread in bits around the remains of my car.
He was fine - they took him to a local vets, and they looked after him for 2 days until I was released from hospital.

And you still haven't; they really don't do "owned". If you treat them well they'll choose to live with you though. So I'm now a few days in to life with these two:
On the upside, the 3 hour drive home with them went fine and they seemed to settle in very quickly. I'd say they were hesitant for about 10 minutes before charging about the place. Even more helpfully from my perspective, I've had them since Sunday morning and they're yet to fail to use the litter tray. Consequently i opened up most of the rooms in the house to them more quickly than anticipated as all they seemed to want to do is explore and i was less concerned about the consequences for the rooms with carpets. My attempt to block off the staircase with cardboard was defeated (unsurprisingly) on the first night and i haven't bothered again since.
They're two very different personalities, with Bob (the ginger one) much more affectionate. He's happy to fall asleep on your lap in the evening and is happy to be stroked most of the time, purring a lot in the process. The Violet will sniff you but back away if you go to stroke her. On the one hand i'm kinda tempted to pick her up and get her used to being handled. On the other the consensus seems to be to give them time and space and wait for them to come to you. I'd be interested in any further experiences / opinions. It's a shame because the selfish part of me just wants to pet them continuously! They both seem keen to be around me and will normally come into whichever room i'm in to play.
I don't think my brother and sister experience is unusual as the first post here is someone else's word-for-word description of my experience to date:

One thing is for sure, they absolutely love each other and play/fight damn near every waking moment, so i'm very glad i got them both.
