Tips for scaring away birds?

Hi guys,
Does anybody have any tips on scaring away birds; the usual blackbirds, gulls, finches etc. Just had the garden done and it's like somebody is feeding the birds laxatives around us! The decking/stones/patio are absolutely caked in bird s
t. Newly painted fences are more white than brown now and we had the windows washed on Thursday...and I had to wash them AGAIN today.
I'm looking at a few of the rotating head owl decoys, but there seems to be mixed reviews about them. Does anybody have any suggestions of what I could do? Short of breaking out the air rifle.

Couple of weeks back I lobbed a decent sized orange at a couple of seagulls in the garden and scored a direct hit... they seems a bit reluctant to come back now. I guess the orange could be replaced with any chuckable fruit, a house brick, the excitable Jack Russell from next door...
Probably have the RSPB at my door later.

I'm pretty much in the market for something along the same lines though for work. We've got some seagulls that are frankly st machines that have a propensity for sitting on the car roof, taking a dump then paddling around in it.
They're cheeky buggers as well, I came around the corner to the car park at the back of one of the buildings in the first week of the Easter hols and I see this gull stood at the front of my car looking up at the grill and badge. head rotating left and right. Anyway it backs off as I approach unlock the car and pop the boot and as I get in the little sods back and scrabbling on the bonnet trying to get on it.
If it happens again it's going to be a 255/35/20 versus a gull! Really I'm going to follow one of my fathers old work colleagues when he worked at Glaxo in Barnard Castle. They had a massive issue with wood pigeons roosting so he cut out the shape of an eagle owl in steel, painted it black and bunged it onto a heavy base. After week of randomly moving it around the site (this is probably why the rotating head owl decoys have mixed reviews, you've got to keep moving them about the garden, birds do learn) the pigeons buggered off.
I'm going to try the same thing, I'll knock out an eagle owl silhouette in Illustrator, nip into my works laser cutter when its quiet and pop out an MDF decoy (and a cardboard one for mounting on the car). See if it has any effect, if anyone asks I'll say it for an art installation

there are some definite benefits in working at an art college.We have 3 of these on the roof at work. Mainly for seagulls as the can be really aggressive when nesting.

I could understand if you had just bought the new Chiron or Mclaren 720S. I'd have got the blunderbuss out too.
Cleaning the decking might give your heart a work out and mean you live longer. So I would encourage the birds to shiit on it and then you can get some exercise. Also watching birds is very relaxing. They are one of our wild species you can watch close up easily. Very kind of them to put up with us and put on such a display.

It's a bit of a pain when the decking is dark brown and there's 15-20 new bird poo's PER DAY. Yes, per day. And it's all over the garden, tables, bbq, everywhere.I could understand if you had just bought the new Chiron or Mclaren 720S. I'd have got the blunderbuss out too.

You'll probably be disappointed to know that a few hours with an air rifle and the garden has been bird poo free for nearly 2 weeks. Not everybody likes birds. I for one, hate them. The OH is terrified of them, which adds fuel to the fire. I don't mind birds around the garden, but when there's dozens and dozens of them, it's a bit much. The cull seems to have worked for now.
