I've just had my front garden redone with a bit of gravel, and at least one of the cats in the neighbourhood thinks it makes a good litter tray.

What's the best way to stop this?

ETA: I know there are several products available, but I wondered what is worth it...

I got some deterrent powder from B&Q when next doors cat was stting in my garden, it seemed to work. The ultrasonic one was useless.

Supposedly if you can catch them in the act then drenching them with water will make them think twice. That said I chucked a bucket of water over our next door neighbours cat and it still comes in the garden.

You need a Supersoaker and to squirt it every time it comes in the garden, however the cat mustn't see you doing it. If it sees you it will continue doing it when you're not there.

You need the element of stealth so the cat thinks "I'm not going in there; there be NINJAS".

You want a Scarecrow
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Contech-ScareCrow-Motion-...

PIR activated water sprinkler with a decent range. Only thing I've found that can prevent the neighbors cats stting all over my lawn. I've tried lion poo, pepper stuff, and an ultrasonic cat scarer, none of them worked. I even watched a cat get part way across the lawn and then look up as the ultrasonic kicked in, before carrying on his way.

Only problem with the scarecrow is I quite often forget to turn it off before going out in the garden, if I'm quick when I hear it click I can outrun it to the end of the garden, and then run back and turn it off as it resets biggrin

I've got some pellets for now, it's a cheap thing to try first. Unfortunately I've not been able to catch him at it yet as I'm not watching the front garden like a hawk all day, so a supersoaker will be hard to implement.

I'll report on how these work!

Getting a dog of my own was the only thing that stopped all the cat's on my street leaving presents in my garden.

I tried the lion poo stuff myself once. I stood at the counter of the garden centre wondering whether I had ever handed over my hard-earned for anything so proposterous. I wanted to keep my own cat out of the asparagus. It didn't work. If anything it brought on a display of macho crapping in the face of such a worthy opponent at long last.

I am afraid the only solution is to buy a cat yourself. A big, mean ugly old feller.

Well, pellets seem to have had an effect, no more poo for the last couple of days. I'm hoping that was enough for him to choose somewhere else.

I'd love to get a dog, but my wife and I are out of the house for too long during the day.

When I was a teenager my mum and dad used to drench a cat that visited regularly. Turned out it lived up the road with seven other cats and wanted a quieter home. It ended up moving in permanently!
