We've got a Westie who is no trouble apart from when it comes to sleep - he keeps crying unless he's in the room with us.

I live with my parents and when my mum goes to work in the morning (I work evenings) she leaves him downstairs but he won't stop crying. I've tried having him in my room but he's always moving around and it keeps me awake. We've tried leaving a radio on and almost everything else but we have run out of ideas and it's really starting to get annoying as I rarely get more than 5 hours sleep because of it.

Get another ...

That is what we did, our Frenchie is a right sulking dog and used to dog-scream if we closed the doors and left him another room; how old is s/he?

Ours got better once he hit about 12/18 months old and once he was 24 months we got him another French bulldog.

Get a plug in pheromone disperser. Not cheap but much cheaper than another dog! We have an ancient collie (19) and he started to cry/bark at night which set our Patterjack terrier off. Adaptil calms them, well it does with mine at least. No more random barking/whinging. Plus, you can put them in any room because they are plug in. I swear it calms me too! The only downside is that I'm drawn to pi55ing and p00ping outside!
