I'm fully aware these won't be to most people's taste. However my favourite breed by far and very rare in the UK is the Presa Canario. Perro De Presa, a breed with huge history from the Canary islands if you hadn't guessed.
A stunning dog with a fantastic temperament, hopefully next year when a breeding comes up.
I have had the honour of seeing some of the best in the flesh and it endeared me to them even more.

Are the ears operated on to look like that?
The majority are imported into the UK from countries that do crop the ears. Obviously UK breeders don't crop and you can request not to be cropped although traditionalists in the country they are from would frown on it.They have massive lolloping ears and when used as a Catch dog which is what they are they get in the way and can get harmed.
We've got a Neapolitan Mastiff. He's a big lump even for the breed at c.80KG (significantly bigger than his brother which our firends own)
As gentle as you could wish for and instinctive guarder - we have an older female bulldog and access to other dogs so he was well socialised.
He can take a decent size walk but not a breed for people who want a regular yomp.
I feel a bit sorry for him a lot of the time as he loves other dogs but the vast majority are st scared of him so either run off or attack him.
Medically we have had very few issues although he does get allergies in summer. It's hard work in the winter when it's wet and he doesn't want to go out. for the last few weeks he has barely been in the house and spends all day staring at the gate and scaring the st out of amazon delivery drivers.

I know someone with 7, was 8 up until recently unfortunately! They have the room and the ability to feed them properly! As gentle as you could wish for and instinctive guarder - we have an older female bulldog and access to other dogs so he was well socialised.

Lovely dogs and if I had a decent size house and garden I would have one!

the black dog - was anyone else thinking devlis' dog?
My immediate thought was "Hound of the Baskervilles" He is around 60kg and 26 inches at the withers.
Look at that neck!

How expensive are they?
How long is a piece of string literally. From a few hundred literally for bad examples to thousands.

To be fair the Corso is a similar dog, a Corso tends to be slightly less thick set but taller and of a more athletic build. Also the head of a Canario is massive, you have to see one to understand the size. The Corso also reportedly have a more rounded temperament and lack the feline gait of a Presa.
My fascination with the Presa Canario actually started with the Cane Corso as they are stunning. Especially in Frumentino

I class my boy Kaiser as rare as you never see a proper American bulldog these days. I know they are not rare but find another example like that. You just wont find one.
Until around a year ago I had an Alapaha Blue Blood Bulldog which are reasonably rare over here. Sadly they are becoming the new breed of trophy dog in this part of the country, hence I/we got her as a rescue, having had five owners at ten months old. She was very messed up but I spent two years with her 24/7 training her up to be frankly amazing. I very sadly lost her as part of a frankly selfish and messy break up last year. In the right hands though, a fantastic dog. I'd have another tomorrow.makaveli144 said:
