Afraid I'm fairly new to the whisky world, although doing my best to rectify that.

So far I've tried most of the standard blends, whyte and mackay is probably my favourite blend so far, had a couple of bottles of islay single malt (laphroaig) that i found very Smokey, soon got a taste for them but deffinetly a sipping whisky in my opinion.

Apparently some of the more mature islays are very strong flavoured. Also found that I'm very fond of Jameson, not the most complex drink but lovely all the same. What's your tipple of choice? I'm keen to try glenfiddich and talisker hopefully soon, any recommendations?
I use to work in the Whisky World for 5 years so my eyes were opened to what to collect etc.

It was very strange as when I was 18 my friends at the time put one of each Whisky in the bar which was about three quarters of a pint glass and I had to down it.

You can imagine I could not even smell Whisky without wanting to be very sick. Stupid youth.

So trying to taste Whisky and getting use to it was very hard. But after a while I was able to stomach it.

Macallan is the biggest name. This is what many collectors will only collect. The Sherry Casks are the most popular but you for the money can get a better one without spending hundreds.

But for a drinking Whisky many like the Peated Whisky. Many younger drinkers like the Peated which was a surprise.

But personally for me a very good Whisky which sold VERY well is the Aberlour a'bunadh. It is only a very young no age Whisky but it is a sherry cask and it wonderful.

Many people who were into very expensive bottles costing thousands loved this one so it just goes to show. They could not believe it was a no age Whisky and stated it was the best. It was up against Whiskies which were 5-6 times the price.

Needs a little bit of water however as it is around 60% volume but then it will last much longer biggrin

The price seems to have gone North which is a pain. Use to be £33.00 when I was the retail manager and now the new one is £80.00 to £100.

This is the cheapest I have seen on the internet but a closer look might find it a bit cheaper still.

https://www.fortnumandmason.com/products/aberlour-...

There is this one too but I have never dealt with them

https://www.ocado.com/webshop/product/Aberlour-Abu...

Some reviews are not so good now as people think the price has gone up too much. IMO it was too cheap.

There is a new one as well which I have not tried.

Aberlour Casg Annamh Batch 1 but this seems to be heading to auctions pretty quickly. Guess it being the first batch will increase value's in the future.

Cheers for your experience mate, food for thought deffinetly. Afraid my budget is a little modest at the time being as well due to other expensive hobbies, cars being only one of them. What are your thoughts on talisker, I hear lots of good things and know some fairly esteemed people who rate it. Peasants mouthwash, or worth a go?

St John's Wort is a natural pick-me-up, which can also help with sleep. Maybe grab a jar of these to try before going to the quack?
Thank you so much.

Will pick some up at the chemist as I would prefer not to go to the Dr's

Was on antidepressants for 22 years and no doubt they would state this is the reason and want me back on.

Was never depressed but had terrible anxiety, panic attacks and agoraphobia.

Just sh** in the childhood hence why dogs were so good to me.

The best medication would be another Cocker but I will have to wait just now biggrin
Just be aware that you can't take St John's Wort if you're on certain medications - I know that I can't take them because of this.

To be honest is is 100% up to your palate. If I recommend you one you might think it's horrendous while others love it.

One of the best ways it to find a local Whisky shop who might be doing a Whisky tasting. Or you can buy samples from a company called Masters of Malt

https://www.masterofmalt.com/samples/all/

Paying for a sample and not liking it would not hurt so much biggrin

Both my Uncles love Laphroaig but my Aunts think it smells of a hospital.

It is very peaty.

I would order a few samples and see smile

Thanks for that mate.

Yes I was warned not to take when on antidepressants.

So they must do something biggrin

Was invited out for drinks tonight by two guys I know. Agree to go out and got ready.

But I just started to feel more angry and upset at the same time so thought adding alcohol to that frame of mind would not be a good idea.

So made the excuse and bailed.

Shame to hear that mate, emotions are a tricky thing at times, mine creep up on me with no notice. I can leave work feeling great, by the time I get to my front door I want to cry or whack someone with no logical reason whatsoever. Strange as most of the time I'm about as level as you get.

When the times right your be back to normal and feel ok again, until then don't force it and try not to fight your emotions. Easy to type I know. If they are good friends they will understand and invite you out again soon. If all else fails go for a drive. Always works for me and this is pistonheads after all. All the best mate.

Thanks mate. Makes sense.

Clearly it has taken more out of me than I thought possible.

I am very level headed but as you say when your feeling this way your emotions are just all over the place.

Better to wait instead of forcing a night out for the sake of it which could land up even more negative.

Thank you for asking mate. smile

A week today and I feel as just as bad.

Just don't want to sound like a stuck record as when someone continues to carry on moaning about something it can get very annoying but it has hit me very hard.

No problem mate, better to bend our ears rather than upsetting your family. Just be ready to deal with my complaining when I'm unfortunate enough to go through this trauma wink.

Been following this thread as my mutley has also been struggling with his health of late. He's had about a month of deterioration due to some sort of lung / heart problem. He was too old for any aesthetic based investigations so the decision was taken to throw some drugs at him to see if they can help. He had a few positive reactions to some of the drugs but nothing lasted more than a couple of days. Many sleepless nights were spent keeping him comfy and giving him the best chance of sorting himself out but it wasn't to be - Last few days were dreadful. Monday morning was the time to do the right thing by him and our local vet made the whole process as good as it could ever be - still an incredibly hard thing to do and been pretty hard work since.

Day we got him

He was a rescue that was found in Swindon train station covered in tar and puking up glass, then we got lucky and he joined our family. I've worked from home since we got him so pretty much been with him every day of his life for the past 14 years and what an honour it has been. Always said I wasn't getting another dog once Bruno went but I'm not sure how long that will actually last!!

Sorry to about your loss.

Sounds like after a shaky start in life he came to the right home.

Don’t think I could ever be without a dog in the house, despite their heartache you go through with them

So very sorry about your loss mate. Very touching that he was given a life with you after the horrible start in life he was dealt.

Boils my blood that anyone could hurt any animal especially dogs when they are so loyal.

Again so sorry for your loss frown

If you want to post again about anything please do. It helped me a lot.

Thanks man, had a fairly quiet week - kinda hits you in stages especially when you keep finding stuff scattered around.

Older pic from when he had the splint removed from his carpal fusion op and was able to use his leg properly for the first time in about 2 years:
