We decided that our 4 year-old needed to be fitted with a collar and bell (dead rat was the final motivation for us). No real dramas in fitting it, but for the last 12 hours he's really been a massively unhappy mog - constantly meowing; initially running around like his tail was on fire; now creeping about; lack of interest in anything...

How long should we give it for him to accustom himself to it?

You should take the bell off. At 4 years old the cat will never get used to the constant noise. Killing mice and rats is what they do, just accept that and make your cat happy again.

Is it one that easily uncatches if the cat get caught up with it? For example if a small branch or somesuch gets caught under the collar?

well, the issue was fully resolved by the cat. Totally pissed off on saturday morning, he shot out of the house like a rocket at noon and didn't come back for 18 hours.... minus collar. I guess he doesn't like it!
