...yesterday evening my Lakeland got through the hedge and killed 4 of my neighbour's hens. She was about to dispatch the cockerel when I heard the commotion and went around to find her with him by the neck - managed to free him.

It was a pretty horrible experience and I was shaking as I went up the path to knock on my neighbour's door expecting to be lynched. To my utter amazement they were incredibly understanding and pretty much brushed it off as "it's nature", don't worry about it etc. Probably helped that they are country folk born and bred.

I offered to buy new new one's but they very politely declined ("they were getting a bit scrawny anyway") - will buy them some wine instead.

...terriers and hens do not mix.

They generally don't.

The fact that you told them exactly what happened would have made a big difference.

Maybe help them towards their wine fund by buying a bottle smile

We had an identical experience here last year when our Springer Spaniel managed to do the same sort of damage after we'd only moved here about six months. I felt sick to the stomach about it and thought we might have to re-home the Spaniel. Like you, we confessed everything to the neighbours and thankfully, our neighbours had pretty much the same attitude as yours did and were totally lovely about it. We've since upgraded our security arrangements and have thankfully not had a repeat performance. Unfortunately, the replaced chickens fell foul (see what I did there?) to a fox a few months later also.

I would suggest you get some better fencing - chicken wire or something your pooch can't get through - and put it along the hedge.

Should have let it finish the cockerel off.

Now that its managed to do it , it'll be forever trying to have another bash at them.

my jack russel killed a chicken belonging to a neighbour. He was absolutely fuming.

These weren't pets, they were just birds being reared for meat. I gave him 10 euros and said I'm really sorry, i didn't realise the chickens were in the street when I took my dog out. He was then happy and vanished.

About an hour later my door bell rung... it was the same neighbour with the dead chicken, now plucked and gutted. he gave me the chicken, I made a curry with it and it was superb biggrin

My mrs at the time wanted me to tell him it was his own fault for letting his chickens out near my house, and give him nothing. For me, causing mayhem with neighbours over 10 bucks seemed utterly mental. I'm glad I never listened to her.

Another time I heard a commotion in my garden and it was the same neighbours chickens, they were chasing my pitbull around my own garden. I thought they clipped the wings so they can't fly, no idea how they got in. He asked me how many were dead... we both had a look and could only find a few feathers and a crying pitbull, all chickens live and present biggrin

Fortunately my Jack russel cross prefers black
Birds and pigeons, he's quite sprightly for a 15 year old. Oh and not forgetting the neighbours cats which he often corners up our very small tree. Hours of entertainment watching that stand off.

No small animals terrorised, but my German Shepherd Asshole let himself out of the back door, found a route through the hedge and wandered into the little old lady next door’s house. Lucky she likes him really!

hehe that would have been amusing to watch

Our neighbour keeps some form of (very expensive) chicken which was often used for cockfighting. They are hard as fking nails. The current cockerel has killed a fox and the local cats want nothing to do with them at all. They can jump like buggers and he frequently brings one of the hens into our garden and guards her while she has a root around. Very cool. And the chicks are hysterical to watch. I love chickens

We used to have the opposite problem. When we would come back home sometimes our dog would be missing.. The neighbours would "borrow" her - and give her treats etc...(they had our spare keys!)

hehe

He's mostly a good dog, his tendency to be an asshole just emerges now and then.
