Who here has Guinea Pigs?

We've had ours for about 6months. We re-homed them as the previous owner went to university and couldn't take them with her, and her parents fostered young children, so couldn't dedicate the time they need.

They were named by her Benny and Bjorn (big ABBA fan). They're funny little creatures and hilarious to watch potter around the living room (supervised)

Next job is to try and get a photo of them together! It was difficult enough getting decent images of them on thier own!

Lets see yours!

hehe I get a feeling you don't share the love!

They can be a pain in the ass... not sure if we'll get any more when these snuff it...

In all fairness they are no trouble & they keep our dog fully entertained in the summer.

I'm not a pet lover tbh but one has to give n take when you marry, 35 years so far frown

They are great little characters, Bert in particular.

My daughter has 2, she is at uni so I tend to look after them; Gus (male) and Teddy (female).

I thought they would be a bit pointless but they have great personalities and are very cute.

Teddy has had a litter (?) of 3; Pets at Home sexed Gus and Teddy incorrectly but to give them their due they paid for Gus to have his bits lopped of and also checked Teddy and her kids over gratis, have to say I was very impressed with Pets at Home for that and they didn't need any pressure from me to do so either.

Gus is the grey one.

How much st do they produce?

Am wondering whether to get one or two to feed the veggie scraps to to accelerate my home composting.

Very endearing little creatures and really quite loving.

We had two - Badger and Honey. Unfortunately we also have Paddy and Tess, Welsh and Lakeland terriers.

The terriers made it their life mission to get the pigs - they eventually did despite our astute efforts to keep them safe.

Same happened to the Hamsters.

It's obvious really but don't have Guinea Pigs of you have dogs (esp terriers), they will eventually prevail

I've had loads of piggies over the years, I love them and I'd happily have more! But unfortunately we have a lurcher and she definitely can't be trusted with them. Our German Shepherd used to love "visiting" our last couple of piggies, he'd sit in their pen with them! But while we have dogs there'll be no more piggies for now. We had both for a time, but keeping them apart was fairly hard work and so I didn't get any more piggies when my last one went to that great dandelion field in the sky.

We've had four over the years when I was little. Fluffy and Snowy (one was fluffy and the other was an albino). We then had Ginger and Ebony (we aren't that orgnianl when it comes to names...oh and a rabbit called Silky...

A family friend had some. One escaped and rather than tell her son's what had happened, she got another that looked the same. It turns out this one was female and the other that they had was male...lots of babies came.

Best bit? Few months later the original one was seen walking down the garden path! She had to come clean then.

They are terrible. A creature so small should not leave a near infinite trail of poo torpedos behind it. You really don't want them loose in your house as there will be stacks of poo torpedos in every corner of the room and under all your furniture within half an hour and they constantly piss everywhere as well. The screeching they make when their hear the rattling of your bag full of dandelion leaves quickly gets on your tits as well.

Gus is the grey one.
Sadly, Teddy, had to be PTS earlier this week.

She had cancer but it was being managed quite well with pain relief and other meds over the last few months, over the weekend she went down hill rapidly, just not eating or interacting with anyone or Gus, so the correct decision was made.

Anyway as Guineas shouldn't be kept alone, through a vet friend my daughter has managed to find (today, she is there now) a similarly aged rescue female, to partner Gus, she has a similarly personality that Teddy had, which is good as Gus can be full on.

They are on their way home now.

My Mother in Law went on a South American adventure a few years ago.
On the longer road trips they loaded dozens of Guinea Pigs onto the 4x4 mini buses in boxes.
She had no idea why?
The guides made incredible outdoor food each night.
Apparently they taste a little like Chicken!
