Just spotted this thread. We've had two mini-wires from pups, both amazing characters. The second died just a year ago at about 12, having been diagnosed with Lafora's a year previously after having multiple fits.
Laforas wasn't well known when we got them - now It's the probably the first thing to mention.
Gratuitous pic of our current (Romanian rescue) hound who's an absolute star. Certainly not 100% Dachsie, but has the bark...

We also have a couple of dachshunds at home too with the eldest miniature coming up to 9 years old. Unfortunately this time last year he wasnt himself one evening and stayed him his bed all evening barely moving. I woke up the next morning and sat him on a mat to see him wobble over and realised that the inevitable. I rushed to the vets and he was then rused to surgery within the space of 2hours and touch wood he has made a full recovery.
The other thing i would advise against is getting them neutered. When we done the miniature, it changed his whole personality completely. He became much more lethargic and his whole body shape seemed to change and became more bloated looking. The standard one we also have is appraching 3 years old and we havnt neutered him. He has still retained his lithe body shape and is much more playful and energetic.
You also have to be careful feeding them too as they would literally eat until they bust.

I am so sorry for your loss, Laforas is absolutely horrific. I have friends who lost their pups to this (and are some of the awareness vids you see when you search it). Unlike other forms it continually degenerates so the meds don't help as much. Thankfully after a huge campaign managed by some determined individuals who took on some difficult opposition from Accredited Mini Wire KC breeders the breed council managed to change the testing requirements. There is also a database containing affected pups. My wire came from a breeder who resisted (knowingly mating Untested with Affected) - my boy is clear thank God but his litter mates were Affected. Laforas wasn't well known when we got them - now It's the probably the first thing to mention.

Do join the Dachshund IVDD in UK Facebook group regardless if you have an affected pup or not - the symptoms and action to take if your dog is affected is vital to the outcome.
Well, yesterday was a st day. After a very gentle potter round town the night before, he was obviously suffering loads of pain in his back/legs and barely moving in the morning. Off to the vets and his proprioception is poor so almost certainly pressure on the spinal cord due to IVDD. He's medicated up to the eyeballs, confined to bed/cage rest for 4-6 weeks and it's absolutely heartbreaking to see the change from a truly fit and strong dog in such a short time. We're just keeping everything crossed, and the vet seems to definitely know her stuff and isn't sugar-coating things.

Many thanks! Yes, looking at his KC line he does have Carpaccio. How did you know?G
(His KC name is Deercroft True Grit - I think it suits him given the gritty determination he applies to continual barking lol )
I have a mad Teckel.
Loads of character, but is loopy.
Climbs trees to get to magpies and tracks deer until the bitter end. Rules the house, including my 2 rather large lurchers and like to wake me up by lying across my neck, usually after he's had a pee.
Prone to sleeping under the duvet, but more often that not goes to his cage beside the lurchers.
Had him for a year and he has become ingrained and very loved. Will be worked properly as well.
He has no papers, comes from ground working parents who both saw fox and tracked deer, so papers are irrelevant.
My son also has one who is possibly a little bit different to mine.
