It’s a bit like cars really, in that it’s quite hard to buy a really bad one these days. Sure it’ll be fine. Personally I like 12’ plus for a float rod (though I used to have a lovely little 11’ Harrison canal rod) but pellet wagglers are usually short.

Ok, I visited a local and newly opened Angling Direct store, which, as a noob, is mind numbingly full of stuff I have no idea for...I found and bought a Maver basic float kit - lovely carbon 10 foot match rod and reel, some lead, couple of wagglers....add maggotts and go fishing....

So, I did.....

Mate told about a spot on the local canal that could be good....

Lots of the above going on.....and them the float dived under and started taking line ...eek....

Eventually got this little beast landed....

No scales to weigh it, but I think thats a PB for me from freshwater....

Excellent!

Going to take the kids again in the next couple of weeks. Took them mackerel spinning on Chesil Beach recently, we came home with four (sadly all caught by me) but they really enjoyed it.

bit of an update.....

I bought a Maver Float starter kit, 10' rod, reel , just add bait deal...

Spent a few evenings on the canal and it worked well...

Went to Alders Farm today, a commercial and heavy stocked fishery...

Ended up smashing my PB with some stonkingly hard fighting 6/8lb carp....

Discovered how much I dont know, and also how big a buzz to land a hard fighting lump of Carp on 8lb line and a 10' match rod.....

Still buzzing.....biggest coarse fish Ive ever caught -and I left the phone in the car - Doh!!!!

Good stuff Turn7
Glad to hear that you are enjoying it.
Don't worry about photos/cameras etc. The reason to fish is to get away from all that nonsense and enjoy the natural life.
I haven't been for a few months but have a week on the Broads in September with the wife , who also loves fishing.

Can't wait !!

Anyone buy shop bought, pre-tied hair rigs? We usually just float fish. Want to try and target some bigger carp & fancy having a crack at using them but haven’t ever tied them before. Anyone got any positive reviews for them, brand, type etc?

Any of the Korda stuff would be a good bet, it’s nicely made if not the cheapest.

Have a look at the Korda website, I’m sure there will be a section showing you how to tie your own.
You don’t need all the latest & best kit, just some decent line, hooks, an unhooking mat & landing net suitable for the size of fish you are looking to catch.
Your local tackle shop will be able to help too.

They're pretty easy to tie. I think I'd just find somewhere to catch them off the top, though, much more fun.

Don’t buy pre-tied hair rigs - a simple knotless knot is just about the most simple thing in the world

That’s told me. Didn’t realise they were that straight forward! Cheers!

Its even easier once someone has shown you in real life - ask another angler next time you are out - most will be only too happy to show you how to tie them.

Very nice - nothing scraps as well as a double figure common. Well done!

I ventured out last weekend and managed to bag one too - September/October are my favourite months for fishing as they munch with abandon as the light levels and daylight hours change.

My favourite months too, although I've had some cracking Tench and Bream fishing this summer, I am now switching across to Perch for the next couple of months. So many fisheries don't have Pike these days, that the Perch have thrived and are generally left alone.

Light levels are critical for Perch, at one water I could almost set my watch by the times of takes (nearly always a ten minute window at dusk). But regardless of species, dawn or dusk is my favourite time to be fishing. i always scratch my head when people pack up an hour or two before dusk or turn up mid-morning.

My particular WTF is people who recast and bait up at first light. Way to completely screw up your chances!

Here’s one I caught on maggots that had been out in the pond for 19 hours in February - I caught one at bite time the day before and recast it - it was staying there until past bite the following day!

Fake maggots are brilliant for that - at least you know they haven't been chewed to skins.
