We had a goldfish in a little tank and then decided to buy a bigger tank.
I already have a pond outside so decided to grow on a sturgeon to go into the pond when it warms up a bit.
I have a sturgeon in the pond already but will need to move it on as it's got too big now it started out the same size as the one in the tank but is now about 4.5ft long.

That's bloody lovely.
What's the palm in? Looks like a holey bottomed pot?
Temu special, one of these. What's the palm in? Looks like a holey bottomed pot?
I've got two more but would be overkill Scape wise

Looks great. The only thing that worries me with plastics like this is what they do in water. My local shop does TDS readings (total dissolved solids) and has found some items marked for aquarium use shoot up the TDS to crazy levels as the plastic leaches.
I'm just starting my 'proper' freshwater research, having not really pushed the boat with freshwater for a long while (last time was a 60l nature style planted with yeast based co2).This whole concept of measuring tds I find really odd compared to salt. Yeah, the tds is important - but the real question is 'what does that tds comprise of?', which doesn't seem to be of a concern at all, just getting the numbers in the right range.
Current thinking is using a pH controller to control Co2 injection properly for the plants and fish - but I'm thinking through whether I'd remain using RODI source water then remineralising. I'm also considering ferts, and whether to go 'lean ferts' dosed either manually or via a doser. I'm on the south coast, with very hard tap water - but will be going for stendker/similar discus, no Blackwater setups here!
My perception is that I'll use a fair amount of co2 due to off gassing over the weir to the sump. Discus require heavy feeding, but having a couple of big emersed plants should help with nitrate/phosphate levels - plus a big water change once a week.
Also considering lights. At the moment I've got mental levels (and quality) of light, and don't want a mega high energy planted tank - but do want good quality silent lights that'll support both the emersed and submerged growth and show off the fish across the 120x60cm footprint.
Of course, I've still not fully committed to either continuing with the reef or switching it all up!

I’m toying with an glass box idea, but can’t decide if it’ll be fish based or Day gecko based
Glass box?If I had space I'd also get a paludarium on the go, waterfall and all
I meant its either Fish or Day Geckos........

I can't control that so will carry on, in the meantime the plants thrive and they help the water quality no end.Turn7 said:
Agreed, but dont have that amount of space...

I get geckos naturally so am biased

These guys are way more interactive and I just love watching them
Spent yesterday visiting Elliot at the Fish Barn. Always a pleasure, although pulling up in the car park to hear 'bloody hell, Sway's here - dad, stick the kettle on!' is a nice touch. I think!
I'm going to break down the marine setup, sell a bunch of the kit then I think there's a nice plan around a nicely scaped and planted Angel tank.
One thing that blew my mind, mentioned a shoal of cardinals of about 75-80, they laughed. From their personal experience, I should be looking more like 3-400! But there's no one I trust more, and they'd source/import them specifically before giving them a full quarantine and conditioning process before I pick them up.
Lights chosen, a pair of Superfish. pH controlled CO2 injection, and a LOT of epiphytes - especially bucephalandra and all the varieties thereof.
Going to be gutting breaking down the marine, but excited about the potential.

What size of tank is this?
He had a 5x2x2, similar aims as me, and had 600 in there and reckoned he really wanted more.
Tbf, he is basing this on knowing I'll be doing a bunch of water changes, plus using remineralised RO, etc.
But, I want a proper 'school'.
Back in my early days of fishkeeping in the late eighties I had a nice angelfish tank (48" x 24" high). In those day you could easily find really decent wild-type angelfish with proper silver bodies, deep dark banding and gorgeous red eyes. Possibly wild-caught in some cases but more likely tank-bred from wild parents. I never see that quality of angelfish nowadays when I visit aquarium stores, all are farm bred and lack the magnificent natural colouration and markings. Altum angelfish are even more beautiful than standard angels and probably nearly as easy to keep (certainly easier than discus).

That's one of the great things about the Fish Barn - they'll import directly from the South American collectors, so great quality/low stress. I usually shy away from wild caught, but the Amazon is probably a great exemplar of how it should be done, promoting sustainability and looking after the environment as it's a high value source of jobs, etc. I have to admit, I'm still not sure if I'm going to go for wilds or high quality but incredibly artificial kois/red devils...
Sounds like you have an excellent supplier! Whatever direction you go in I’m sure the fish and your nicely-dimensioned tank will be beautiful. I’d love another angel tank one day - I had to get rid of all my tanks years ago due to house moves and kids. If I did it again I think I’d go for Pterophyllum altum angels - I think they’re even more beautiful than wild-type scalares.
Have neglected the new tank last few days, had guests in town.
50% water change and dealt with some algae on the side glass that gets full morning sun, plus added some detail stone.
May rearrange them but it helps break the expanse of sand in the foreground.
I'd not seen all 6 Corys since I put them in, did so during the WC, also really enjoying the Lemon Tetra, first time I have kept them, all 6 of those accounted for as well.
This batch of Rummys on the other hand are s
t, so skittish!
Also managed to find 7 of the 10 Shrimp that went in, let's see when/if they start reproducing.
