Looking to spend a weekend away at the end of November with the OH and our dog. It’s our first time away all together so looking for some recommendations of places to go. When it’s the two of us we normally head down to Cornwall or Devon as we both love the beach, but could look at the New Forest or Cotswolds as an alternative.

Any recommendations for location that will give us plenty to do together, and good walks for the dog.

Pembrokeshire.

Like Cornwall without the crowds. Lots of wonderful dog friendly beaches, and other great walks inland.

If you need suggestions of walks, let me know.

As an area I prefer the cotswolds, however walking in the new forest is easier. You can walk anywhere.

If cutesy towns and scenery are your thing then the cotswolds, if it's walking anywhere at anytime and a flattish landscape pick the new forest.

I presume you mean where to base yourself? TBH, most of Pembrokeshire is great, so it really depends on what you want - somewhere on the coast or more inland; a town (there is only one city - St David's) or country location.

When we used to go there on holiday, the place we stayed was not far from Haverfordwest, but we generally travelled further afield for days out/walks with the dogs.

If you had to pin me down to my two favourite places in Pembrokeshire (the places we go to regularly now that we live nearby) it would be the Gwaun Valley, near Fishguard, and Bosherston - so the far north and the far south!

But there are lots of good places in between. We also like Llys y Fran reservoir, Scolton Manor, Blackpool Mill, Lamphey Bishops Palace, Dinas Head, Abereiddy to Porthgain on coast path, Carew Castle, Barafundle Bay.

I know a lot of other people like Tenby and Saundersfoot, but that's not an area we've visited - too popular/busy for me!

PS - favourite beaches would be Broadhaven South (which is accessible from Bosherston Lily Ponds) and Freshwater West. More local to us is Poppit Sands. All are dog friendly.

I have tried to reply to your email with some walk suggestions, but not sure whether it has gone through - my email sometimes doesn't like attachments!

Let me know whether or not you get it.

Abereiddy to Porthgain is a nice walk but dogs should be kept on a lead. The cliff edge is very crumbly and there have been several cases of dogs being lost over the edge in recent years.

I would recommend Newgale myself due to its length. There is also a really nice 1 mile walk from Pwllgwaelod Beach to Cwm-yr-Eglwys.

I agree, we would never walk our dogs off lead. The Pwllgwaelod Beach to Cwm-yr-Eglwys walk you mention is probably part of the circular 3 mile walk we usually do around Dinas Head.

Me, the Mrs and the dog went to North Wales earlier this year, stayed in Dolgellau. It was brilliant, everywhere dog friendly and lots of walks, it was great as a base but you have access to lots of places near the sea or inland to visit.

Lynmouth Lynton North Devon very dog friendly. Went to a beautiful guest house there years ago called The Heather ville who were happy to have dogs.

Forest of Dean log cabins another one to look into. (or log cabins nr Liskeard called deer park?)
