We are travelling into Europe with our motorhome in the late spring and taking our dog with us. We’ve been abroad with him many times and obviously the pet passport system works fine. With Brexit in mind and the implementation period we believe we are okay to take him this year on his current passport. Looking on the DEFRA website it all seems a little bit confusing with conflicting advice. The implementation period will be until the 31st of December this year so we think it should all be the same as it is now until the deal is thrashed out. Has anybody got any further advice or comments.

Unfortunately I don't think anyone will know because we don't know if we are leaving with no deal or if a deal what deal.

Similar to you we are taking the dogs away this year but going to Scotland instead of across the channel this time in case of any quarentine issues.

Either way, nothing will change in 2020. 31/01/20 is the beginning of the Transition period, which can be extended, but if BlowJob gets his way, it won't be. Even if we leave without a deal, that won't be until 31/12/20.

Yes that is basically as we understood it to be and have signed up to the DEFRA website for updates.

The vet is telling us if we are going away in May we really need a blood test for rabies which takes four months anyway so if he doesn’t pass we can’t go as there isn’t time to arrange another. It’s all rather annoying really so we’ll see what comes back from the government website

We have just begun this process, in the last week. First rabies jab done, and we have to go back in 30 days to make sure it's taken. If not, we do it again, and wait another 30 days.

If it has taken, then we're good to go, straight away. We need the worming treatment coming back but that's not a problem.

Nobody has mentioned 4 months to us, but we have been told to get a French pet passort too (we have a house there), because it makes two-way travel far easier, apparently. So if you regularly go between the UK and another country, you may want to consider that.

We have just phoned the helpline and it seems that for this year in the transition period things are staying the same as they currently are for this year only. Once they have thrashed out what’s actually happening it might change but we will know that at the end of this year after the transition period and deal has been agreed or not.

Hmmm interesting very interesting.

Wondering how it will make things easier crossing to the UK if we are out.

Also won’t we have two passports one stamped one way, one another? Sounds like reason to block Entry.

Sir there is only one stamp in this passport, yeah we used this one coming out, I do not recognise this filthy british document

It doesn’t get stamped at all leaving the uk. Only for coming back where a vet stamps it after a check up and worming tablet. The pet centre in Calais don’t stamp it either. They just check that it’s been done by a vet

I know I go twice a year.

It gets checked for up to date vaccines etc however if they don’t recognise ours and we don’t recognise theirs because we pull out of the agreement I’m wondering how getting a foreign one will help.

We had a problem once with ours due to incorrect dates put on by our vet. Only option was to get a French passport which was exactly the same as ours but half the price. That was a fun day !!

If you want to move around within mainland Europe, then having (for example) a French one will make life a lot easier than having an English one.

We hope to be going to France in August and thought we should get a French pet passport for our dog whilst we’re there. Is there any additional documentation I’ll need to take to the French vet or will the UK passport suffice for proof of jabs etc?

Thanks.

When there was a problem with our uk one. We obtained a french one no issue. The microchip number was a digit out so the easiest thing was to get a french one as we were travelling back next day. A lot cheaper than uk as well.

Our rescue dog which we got 2 years ago gone January came from Southern Ireland & as far as we are aware, he has an Irish pet passport. He was already chipped but registered on an Irish register so my wife registered his chip with an English company. Can we use his pet passport as him being an EU dog to save the carry-on if we want to take him to Europe.
