So neighbours through the wall (semi-detached) have a new dog that likes to bark, including occasionally before 7 am, but more frequently non-stop for 30-40 minute periods when left home alone.

Is this excessive? Anyone else had to deal with the same problem?

Watching, as we also have a neighbour who seems to be selective deaf to their barking dog.

I'm so pleased I have a detached house (even if it's not much more than a metre or two away from my neighbors)

Our sausage likes to tell the clouds who's boss if she can get a view out the window.

We are good in that it's a no no as we'd not like it if our neighbours (who all own dogs) allowed the same. But sometimes you can't stop it.

Do you know if their pup is being crate trained. Ours is alot quieter (silent) if she goes into her crate for a nap ( if we head out to the shops). So that might be a solution.

I'm along for the ride...

We also have our own dog. He's generally very quiet to the extent that he never makes any noise in the garden. When he's out for a walk he's a nutter and just shouts at anything and everything out of sheer excitement and small man bravado! Inside he just gets excited when somebody comes to the door. Importantly, we don't allow him to continue making a racket for more than a few seconds before we intervene.

Next door (semi) have bought a German Shepherd. When it goes in the garden it patrols the perimeter and barks constantly. It sometimes goes on for a couple of hours. It never lets up. In the house we get the same and it can go on for up to an hour. I can hear them bellowing at it to shut up.

So, I feel the OP's pain and, as we've had noisy neighbours in the past, have started browsing RightMove for detached properties.

Hi George

Barking dogs can be a problem, the owner may not be aware if it is something that happens when the dog is alone.

Generally speaking most owners find the thought of their dog barking incredibly upsetting as it means the dog is not happy when left alone. Also they are often quite surprised to hear it as they really didn't know it was so much of an issue. It is very stressful for people when their neighbours complain because the concern about their dog is compounded by the stress of worry about upsetting your neighbours. If they were unaware then they may look for dog care when they are out.

Stopping a dog barking because of fear of being alone/ separation anxiety can take time and it's not a quick fix. It takes time and dedication but it IS fixable.

If they want to fix it - they need to get a behaviourist in to help. Unfortunately not everyone wants to spend the money and but the legwork in to sort behaviour/training issues.

My recommendation (if you genuinely would like to help) is pop round and explain that the dog is barking when they leave and say you understand they may not have been aware, ask if there is anything you can do to help? You are way more likely to get it sorted if you are supportive and show concern and understanding - if you were really kind it might be that you could help by popping in to see the dog or even help them time the duration it is barking. Not for everyone I know - but if you at least have a dialogue with them, you may be kept updated if they do start working with a behaviourist and then you will know that it won't go on forever.

Good luck. smile
