We have moved the nags AGAIN to another yard. this has to be their last.

They have settled in well and the dotta is happy so there's that. i am absolutely skint now though lol.

Next thing on the list is to either buy a 7.5t box or invest in a trailer (but also need a car to tow it). Competition season is approaching fast.
We just bought a ford ranger to tow our trailer having just had a Toyota landcruiser.

All the cheap horse boxes I know of have lots of issues but if you are mechanically minded then it can be more reasonably priced. I'm not confident or competent enough to risk it

Regards the water freezing , has anybody considered solar powered trough heaters ?
Does anyone have experience of these? For a couple of hundred quid I would take a punt, but if they were 500, I would not without real life use case
Everybody uses them out here (Canada) due to the vast distances etc , certainly can't comment on cost for you but would be very surprised if they were anything 500 for you . Gotta be someone supplying near you .

From previous life, I have been there with a a 7.5tr, but being skint won’t deliver much joy or cheap running …….

I reverted to a shed Trooper and IW 510 trailer

Fun in the lorry but also frustrating
According to auto trader there’s only ONE Trooper listed for sale in the UK and even then in the description it’s a non runner and since sold. I didn’t think they were that rare…

Cheap and worn out 7.5t are just money pits.

I paid about £16k for one that was advertised for £22k - she would have got 22k but she mentioned to me that she had 3 days left to sell it before leaving for her new life in another country. It was a good solid lorry with low miles but poor cosmetics in and out so I have done a full refurb and re-fitted the interior and re-painted it etc...it is now perfect and probably worth closer to £30k. It is a really nice camper to spend time in now.

If you need to pay a mechanic then they get very expensive quickly. I have paid a few jobs just due to size and complexity or time but I would have easily paid out over £10k in labour for what I have done to it on top of that.

I've spent time googling the heated water thing in the UK and cannot find a UK based solar water heater for horse feeders.
I can find US based ones but would welcome a couple of links for the UK (Must be solar based) if anyone has them

I would think you need someone to build you an evacuated tube solar setup with a pump and expansion vessel plus solar to run it.

Jonathan (Director) at batteries and solar was very helpful with advising me on a setup for the 7.5t lorry - he may be able to help you:

Ah yes- I am going back 10yr.
I had three of them on and off.
If doing again now I would look at a RAV4 if only one nag, or Hyundai probably

Sad day , had suspected things were amiss with the old girl , one week short of her 29th birthday . When she didn't come in for her oats this morning my fears were confirmed , got the quad and rifle just in case then found her a few miles away , probable heart attack , will leave her in peace to go back to nature . All part of the rich tapestry I suppose

Sorry to hear that and it takes a brave man to take the rifle but I do think we should be prepared to do that ourselves with as much dignity as possible.

No bravery , it comes with the territory . If the nearest large animal vet were to come out immediately it's still way over an hours drive and I can't see an animal suffering so have to be prepared . No different to farmers

@Dave_GLA : Don't know if your still looking but have just plated our 7.5T to March 2024, 2001 Iveco, decent lorry with usual patina for age. Day Grooms area (not really living area) and stalled for 3, 2 big horses or 3 ponies. Spent a fair amount in keeping it roadworthy smile but nothing fancy. Would be putting up for £8k soonish as down to 1 nag and he's currently not in work, will be getting a smaller box or trailer in future.

My post was about the lorry that I own…maybe you are responding to someone else? Sounds a bargain though.

I hear people talking about plating their lorry but I think they have it confused…plating is a vosa process to have the gross weight documented - you would plate a lorry if you changed the weight etc. a 7.5t lorry just has an MOT as per an HGV….it seems that people have used "plated" as slang for mot on an hgv?

Thanks mate but we are also downsizing. We currently have both the TB and the Welsh up for sale and will consolidate into a single, more capable breed to be honed into something enabling competitive showjumping.

The TB never fails to miss a chance to generate bills. This time he has developed a mouthful of ulcers that we think he got from eating tree mushrooms or licking something he shouldn't have. Almost healed now but i'm not sure how this particular horse seems to be drawn to mayhem.! biggrin

Yep, money pits. Our WelshD has just been diagnosed with mild arthritis in his rear hocks. Big vet bill incoming.

If your looking for well put together, SJ give Ron Brady a look - usually has well-developed SJs and a gent to deal with. He's on facebook - search ron brady sport horses.

So my OH essentially exists solely to plough all our money into horses, but she is extremely lucky to have forged a career out of it all which goes some way to keeping it all paid for!

We’ve got Houston, our 16.3hh 19 year old mare out of Brendon Stud’s “Ralph” (Caretino Glory). She’s competed up to 1.30m on this one, and is affectionately known as her “horse of a lifetime” and been with my OH for the last 10 years.

Then there’s Conker, our 6yo gelding which we’ve had since he was 6 months old. Mad as a box of frogs this one.

We’ve also got Tampa, 17.0hh 13 years old. She’s our brood mare as we bought her after her retirement from competition, and comes from Grand Sire that medalled at the Barcelona Olympics.

June 2021 she gave us our current youngster, Tabby, who comes from another line of successful Olympic heritage on the Sire side.

At 2 months old she was this big … and grown into a lovely 2 year old, but no recent pictures to hand! We have high hopes for this one, but only time will tell if all the investment (both time, effort & money) will produce a stirling horse.

She then also rides another 4 horses at various competitions for their owner, who is long past competing herself but seemingly unable to give up the “hobby”!

As others have said, a great way to get rid of all your money, but I don’t think I could imagine life without them all (or the dogs!).

Dream would be to have them all at home to save on the yard rent. Be nice to see them out the kitchen window with a freshly brewed coffee!

Yikes
All those ‘out’ on someone else’s yards ? That’s got to be hefty total livery

Interesting one having ‘dobbin’ at home.
My OH (like most riders) dreamt of it and whilst we only have one acre he (17h Teddy) lives at home in the paddock May to October.
It is lovely the dogs, OH, daughter etc all in the premises. BUT I think they (women) treat the yard the way the men treat the pub - escapism and a time warp.
A horse at home means you kiss that comrade in arms, organised trips out, talking twaddle….

Quite the livery bill each month, but works out better than you'd think. The 2 mares are on "DIY" at a friend's yard with a discount for having more than 1 there, and then the friends & family niceties thrown on top. But OH has to supply the feed, haylage, bedding & do the mucking out.

The youngster is out in a local field with aforementioned friend's youngster of the same age. £10 a week so can't begrudge that one and then the odd round bale & salt lick to supplement the grass diet.

The gelding is kept FOC at one of the riding schools OH instructs at which is a real result and the pony is kept FOC at another yard in return for OH teaching the daughter twice a week and taking out to competitions etc.

The others are free rides and the owner takes care of all costs - OH keeps the prize money in return for keeping them exercised and competed.

Interesting thought on keeping them at home, I hadn't considered it that way! In any event, would have to be one hell of a home setup that is wholly unattainable currently, unless the herd was to be significantly slimmed down!

We have some land and our horse on it but also have 3 other horses here and it's hard work
- If something breaks its down to us
- You need people for holiday cover (hence why we have 3 other horses here
- Muck - you have to get rid of it
- Machinery - keeping it all working unless you can buy new takes time
- horses do get injured and as the "yard owner" you need to be there from time to time
- keeping the yard clean/swept so the debris does not go everywhere
etc

Wouldn't change it though as being able to pop out and see him is really good and therapeutic
