Love our cats dearly but bloody hell they're messy eaters. Not sure if it's a result of them getting on a bit now or came after we switched to a different food brand but after they've had their fill we have to scoop quite a bit back into their bowls.

It occurred to me that maybe a better design of bowl might at least help a bit, what would the powerfully-built PH director's cat's food bowl of choice be, if there is one?

My young cat did this with his biscuits in a cat bowl with hemispherical shape. I now use a Charlie Bigham's pie dish as it has straight sides which keep the food in

Put a smaller dish inside a bigger dish, so that when the little sts faff about it falls into the bigger dish.

Thanks. We have the food bowls on a tray to contain the mess, would just be nice if it stayed in the bowls. Should have said, the bowls we have now are fairly shallow, flat bottomed with vertical sides.

If anything like my cat he'll lift his head to throw back food, get distracted, and it all falls out where he's turned his head to.
They're not the brightest animals.

Or they are shoving their nose in to get the bits they like, and pushing bits out over the edge. Deeper bowls work best, and don't overfill.

Egbert will pick up the bits he doesn't like and actually throws it out of the bowl.

Egbert is a st.

I suspect so. Mine is 13 and bits of food just seem to fall out of her mouth as she eats. Simplest answer is to wait until the bits have dried up, then vacuum them...

I think a deeper bowl would just make it harder for them to eat.

Louis pushes some of his wet food up & over the edge if his bowl..
Lily waits until he's finished & wanders off & cleans it up. No issues with her eating!

If only there was a simple way to pick up the errant cat food pieces. Someone should invent fingers.

Since we’re sharing the pretentious names of our cats and their dining habits…

Matisse is a slow and messy eater. His brother, Hemingway, eats like a dog.

Pretty much what happens here. Add it to the list with putting the rubbish out, wiping your arse, cleaning the car/house etc.

Get a raised/tilted bowl, turned my Rosie from a messy eater to a tidy eater.

Yep - especially when they get older

I actually just put the bowls on a 2" box to help. Seems to help to stop them chucking up as often too smile

Thanks both - actually that second point is very interesting, ours have gotten a bit pukey now they're older, that might be worth a shot.

Feline behaviourist wisdom is that cats really dislike their whiskers touching obstacles, so paw their food out of deep bowls onto the floor from which they can eat undisturbed. See what happens if you use a sideplate?

In my experience most of the food just ends up behind the sideplate! But I agree bowls with sharp-angled recesses should be avoided. I might try the raised spherical type (not me, the cat).

My two use these bowls too. Mainly as I’d also heard it cut down on puking.
