Nothing booked yet as we are looking for recommendations for our first family skiing holiday. Ideally as hassle free (i.e. packaged) as possible, and suitable ski school for a 5yo and 3yo, pool etc pretty much essential for non-skiing days. Not bothered about apres-ski as obviously we'll have the kids with us. Don't mind driving down, but as most kit (especially the kids) will be hired, flights not a major issue.

Suggestions welcome.
Esprit- La Rosiere, been 2/3 times with them (also les Arcs). Personally wouldn't go with any other company with kids.

We're in Montgenerve as I write with immediate family to include my youngest who are 5 and 10. The lessons are great, the resort is absolutely ideal for families with a good range of easy/medium runs for all. If you are experienced there's a huge amount of off piste and with a good dump of snow and a guide a lot of fun can be had.

We booked through Peak Retreats and all seems fine so far. We're staying in an apartments with 40 friends and the pool etc. Is a good end to the day.

However reflecting on my speed related comments on the 2016 thread in sorry to report that one of the party has been in hospital since midday having hit his head on a red run. Fortunately he had a helmet on and he's had a scan and all is fine which is great and I can't fault the rescue team or hospital who have all been brilliant throughout what has been a fairly traumatic day (it's my eldest daughters boyfriend)

Makes me think twice about bombing down the red and mild black tomorrow that's for sure!

Missed this year due to having to work so much.

Fingers firmly crossed for 2017 - Mayrhofen Austria likely on the cards. Might be having my young nephew come along who will be getting lessons and experiencing the snowy mountains for the 1st time in his life which should be a fun new element to the hols. smile

Just got back from Verbier which had the best coverage I have ever seen this late in the year....we lost most of one day to bad vis but had 6 inches of fresh snow the next day to make up for it.

We'll be going back for Christmas. Not a cheap resort but we went last Christmas and had a great week (when other resorts had to open up their bikes parks)...altitude is your friend early and late season...

School holidays have not fallen great for next year, we will be over in St Gervais for Christmas & new year but the skiing is very snow dependant at that time, then Easter holidays are not until 6th April again snow is iffy, so that only leave the feb half term for the kids. Will just have to have a couple of boys weekends away to justify having an apartment.

Let me guess family of 4 and chalet catering - guessing £5-6.5k all in?

nope, just me and the GF and to be fair costs not working out that bad (ok its not cheap, but skiing isnt exactly a budget holiday), also my GF is kinda dragged along so go somewhere nicer with her than if i was going with the boys!

catered chalet (outdoor hot tub), flights (from manchester £35 supplement), transfers, ski carriage (£35 supplement), full 3 valleys lift pass, plus 5% discount for booking a second holiday with them (used them last year), total cost is £1,770.20 for 2 of us.

That's not bad - were off Feb half term and will have to go every half term until the kids have left school... Flights alone for us are £1-1.1k which with BA is very good (same flights now are £3k economy)...

We're going at half term too - went to Courcheval at Easter this year but have had enough of high French prices. The only advantage of France is we can fly from Southampton airport.
Any suggestions for Italy (Souze-dou?) or Austria? Just me and the wife and 16 year old son who is a much better skier than me. Looking for nice catered chalet, ski in and out and decent ski school for my son (so he can have a few hours skiing with people of his standard). Cheers

Have a friend living in Canada, and he's planning on getting a job in Whistler for the season, so a few of us are planning on visiting him there.
Could anyone recommend a company that does reasonably good deals on trips to Whistler?

yeah its not as bad as you think, i've done a few package holidays (crystal) and a few DIY and now the costs of flights are getting more (plus baggage plus skis.....) its quite nice just to let someone else take the hassle out of it. especially travelling with the GF, for instance this year we abandoned landing at chambery because of weather, went somewhere else, re-fueled then had another go. some people were panicked about missing transfers or if we ended up at a different airport etc... was nice just to know the tour operator was there to sort out all the logistics.

Definite NO for Sauze d'Oulx - Worst skiing holiday I ever had there. Area is supposedly linked to somewhere else, but most of the time high winds shut the links and if you do get across and the wind gets up it's a taxi ride back (£100+!). Had a run in with a horrible old witch in one of the shops too. Unfriendly, crappy skiing, a bit chavvy - Just no!

On the other hand, I had a lovely holiday in Bardonecchia just down the road - People as lovely as they were hateful in Sauze!

M

PS Did I say, don't go to Sauze? wink

It's linked to Montgenèvre. Sauze itself is actually quite a good resort, it has decent off piste there too. I have only been for a couple of days to catch up with friends but thought it was fun.

Whistler - again...been going every year since 2000 and now own a small place there so it's the easy choice for us. I've been there three times this season, going again in July for a few days on the summer holiday, then heading straight out on Boxing day for 10 days.
