Building cleaned up recently? South East area?
No and no.

There's been ongoing work to protect the fabric (e.g. replacing cement mortar with lime) but no cleaning that I'm aware of.

I'll offer this obscure one up to you for a bonus point, then smile

Neighbouring county to the other, and obviously more modern.

Quite a bit older than that. (However the neighbouring castle was largely demolished following the Civil War. This building is much better known than the castle.)

Yes, Herefordshire. In answer to the lichens question, it's quite a few hundred years old, it survived the Henry VIII era.... (I think it's about 900 years old, but the image itself is much much older. The image comes from celtic pagan times, so go back about 2000 years.....)

That's a new one on me. Stonework looks like Worcester Cathedral or one of the castles nearby like Hartlebury.

It's at St Mary's, Burford, in Shropshire . The church has Norman bones but was given a good going-over by Sir Aston Webb, so I guess this is Victorian.

Back to the original picture. yes it's Herefordshire, Anyone care to narrow it down further - location, age, etc?

There are a many other carvings on this building, but the one shown is probably the most famous.

Gave up and googled. Turns out I lived within a few miles of it for a year but had never heard of it.

Wrong county, you were right with Herefordshire.

The pub name is very apt. If you're commuting to Monmouth, where are you starting from, as you could be very close, especially if starting from Leominster...

The stone carving does have a name, I'll tell all after someone gets it, including why the pub name you've quoted is very apt.....

We have a winner smile Yes, it's the Sheela na gig, one of the medieval carved corbels at Kilpeck Church, just southwest of Hereford. It's well worth a visit (and the nearby pub is excellent too...)

Over to you...

@Wiccan, The Harewood End link - are you thinking of the 'Disney' dog and hare corbel, or something else?

Excellent crime/mystery novel which feature Kilpeck heavily - "All of a Winters's Night" by Phil Rickman.

Used to travel a lot to or through Monmouth/Hereford for work, heading Shrewsbury or Wrexham etc. If heading for North West we would go up through Brecon then A470 ish etc.

Always remember that pub for some reason. Pity we never went far off route to see the other places but work is work.
