I have heard that we will have difficulty hiring a car in Cuba using our old-style (non-photocard) driving licences ? Does anyone have relevant experience ?

Slightly off topic, I went on a jeep safari years ago in Cuba. There were zero checks carried out. It was a free for all anyone could drive, licence or not.

H & S wasn't a strong point.

Sounds like you were lucky. The police don't mess about and you could have just as easily ended up in jail.

Four years ago I was on a guided scooter tour and the police pulled over the guide to check paperwork which was all in order. If it wasn't I wouldn't have been surprised to find myself detained.

I guess things have changed since then but I didn't see any petrol stations anywhere on the main roads nor anywhere you could stop for food etc.
