Thanks tomtom. Looks like £40 for an annual policy. Slight hesitation is that their policy does not mention anything about theft... They get excellent rating also!

These policies cover the excess that you pay to the hire company in the event of a loss (or the other stuff they cover). Loss includes theft, but check the wording of the rental agreement if you're unsure.

Also remember that if you're found to be negligent then the hire company may pursue you for the entire cost of the car...

I always end up using Avis through holidayautos.com and find them very reasonable, never had a problem with them.
This every time.

We were in Italy a few weeks ago and hired a car with Europcar and they were fine. All the other (cheaper) companies had huge queues at them whereas we got taken straight away. Only minor issue was we booked a Fiat 500 and they tried to give us a Toyota Aygo but we refused and they relented and gave us a brand new 500.

On the way home at a petrol station just outside the airport my partner managed to crash into the plinth holding the petrol pumps and made the front tyre explode cue me jumping out and immediately dragging the spare tyre out the boot to change it over so we didn't miss our flight (it was like a formula one pit stop). When we dropped the car back they took pictures of the damage and only charged us a £75 admin fee.
Interesting, I had similar incident with Europcar, but it left a bit of a sour taste...

Hit a pothole on a mountain road, puncturing the tyre. Returned it to Malaga airport and they obviously noted the space saver. Spoke to the woman at the desk who stated it would probably be a EUR25 puncture charge. Eventually got a receipt out of her for the damage report, which she was very reluctant to give.

Eventually got a charge of about £150 on my card. Queried it, then queried it a bit more and eventually dragged an invoice out of them for £76 tyre and £76 'admin fee' for 'unreported damage'. After some more challenging including sending in my receipts etc they eventually just refunded the whole lot. Very fishy...

It's interesting that none of the excess insurers I've used will touch Green Motion. I'll just leave that fact hanging there without comment...

I've never had a bad hire car experience.

Best was booking a BMW 320i or similar at Thrifty nesr the Trafford Centre in Manchester. Price was the same as a Ford Focus from everywhere else.

Ended up with a 535i. Amazing car.

I think the customer service issues are more down to the country you are in than the company involved.

I've had a puncture in the States and they apologised to me biggrin (and was issued a new car mid-rental)

Questor is a good shout. I had to claim for my excess from the Europcar debacle and it was a fairly simple process, no quibbles once all of the info was uploaded.

If you have to claim using your excess insurance for say a dent or a scratch or breaking both door mirrors off after youve rolled the car, does this have to be declared when you renew your own car insurance ?

Nah, I'd say not. Accident in this country? Yes.

Anyone used one of these car rental companies lately? Looking for a temp option a few times a month and the likes of Avis etc are expensive. I used to use Ridelink but they have closed...
