I came back from there a couple of weeks ago,

We had a Villa with a heated pool so used that as a base and just had a chill out week, we did go out to eat most lunch times and evenings.

Visited Playa Blanca, El Golfo, Puerto Calero, and went up to Teguise ? all ok but the nicest place was Puerto Calero, a bit pricey in the restaurants but then it is on an expensive looking Marina.

We stayed just outside Puerto Del Carmen, away from the main Town so was nice and quiet.

Had lunch on the last day at Playa Honda, it seemed to be the place for the locals.

And yes it was windy most of the time, it ranged from a light breeze to a bleeding hurricane, not sure I would return I really like the Greek islands more if honest.
Yes, !

I would also be suggesting many of the Greek islands are far nicer in respect to beaches,

How many Greek islands are there for tourism ?

We have done Crete twice,

Rhodes once, Corfu once, enjoyed all of them if honest, great weather a few places of interest, I guess it depends on what you want/need from a Holiday.

We fly from Bournemouth which is just up the road from us so nice and easy, always get a hire car as we do like to get out a little bit and see some thing of the area we are staying in.

My Sister and her Husband will book a Hotel some where hot , get a Coach to it and spend the week laying by the pool getting a tan, all inclusive, it is what they want from a Holiday.

I am off to Cyprus in Sept, third visit, another nice place IMHO and they drive on the right, I think it helps a bit having been there before, I shouldn't get lost coming out the Airport this time.

Oh and the Med is deffo warmer than the Sea off Lanzaroti.

My bucket list is New Zealand, Australia, and Canada, only thing that puts me off is the long flight.

Regarding Costa Teguise we have been twice now staying at the excellent H10 Lanzarote Gardens hotel, no complaints whatsoever, lovely and clean, no sign of chavs anywhere, and decent shops.

This was in January and March three years apart.

Hiring a car is a must though, to see the island properly.

You won't be going to the Greek islands in December though. Or from Oct - April, actually.

My folks used to have a villa in Playa Blanca on one of the first complexes there. Great pool, tennis courts, well equipped 2 bed/2 bath places on a nicely laid out plot 5 minutes walk from the beach. https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g580321... When they'd long sold it and I took the kids back to the island a few times we preferred the place next door http://www.wimpen.com/en/las-brisas/resort.htm. Better pool, a little closer to the beach, albeit with, <shudder>, a bar showing football and running entertainment nights. Not my preferred cup of tea but handy for a chilled beer and a glimpse of the football if opportunity allowed, and inaudible unless in a (less desirable IMHO) poolside villa. A shared pool and the opportunity to play with other children was a big holiday bonus when my kids were still pre-teen.

Playa Blanca is probably the nicest place to stay on Lanzarote. For some, that's akin to saying that it's not terminal is the nicest bit of anal herpes. If you're going to go there, it's certainly the least worst. Less windy than Teguise and the other side, less chavtastic than Puerto del Carmen. Still plenty of bars available with Sky, Guinness and a Full English. But also plenty of great fish, seafood, steak and wine. Very little in the way of veg or salad, as it's all imported. Pleasant walks along the seafront. Fish fresh off the boat if you're up early enough. Cheap booze, fags, perfumes and, possibly, electronics. No timeshare touts. No quiet, hidden coves, either. But as long as you know that you're not in for a desperately cultural experience, it's a pleasant, if occasionally breezy, break in almost guaranteed sunshine.

Fundamentally, it's a volcanic rock with no natural fresh water in the Canaries, which is still the Atlantic, however warm the sun is. The sea is brown and cold. The pool is, or should be, warm and blue. If you're happy with a book by the pool, perhaps watching the kids, it's relatively cheap and generally cheerful. If you like scenery, local culture, or quiet contemplation during the school holidays, it's probably not for you. Perfect for a break in February or October, though.

There are that many Greek islands for holidays and some are small, you pick what sounds like your type of place and go for it

We go to Playa Blanca every March and enjoy it, there isn't usually any wind thats usually on the other side of the island. We have done the scenic tourist bits before and to be honest they are overated, no doub't your saw them poor water down a hole and it came out as steam ?

We tend to go and do bugger all, we pick a car up from the airport drive to the hotel and then walk between the hotel, the town centre and Rubicon Marina, and go between the Ice House and the Junglebar, we just don't want to do anything except eat, drink, sleep and watch boats bob up and down but can see how it can be a bit boring for others.
Thats very similar to how we have spent time, right down to going to the Rubicon Marina, Ice House and JungleBar!

We generally hire a villa with a pool and hire a car from the airport like yourselves. We go for a VERY relaxed holiday and like most on here who go and enjoy it, we go between October and April so avoid most of the crowds. Its ideal for winter sun and the resorts are probably only at 25% capacity over the winter which is all good with me. The chavs with their chav kids tend to want to come and burn over the hot summer months, so tends to be couples in the winter months.

We went out first week of April there and enjoyed it, having spent Christmas in Tenerife.

We've started to do eastern Europe for summer month "cultural" breaks - we're just back from Krakow a week ago which was fantastic, and we're planning on heading to Dubrovnik in Croatia next time, so we're not concerned about a "cultural" winter break.

Heading back to the same villa again in Lanzarote in October - and looking forward to taking it very easy and watching the world go by....

I've avoided the canaries up to recently because of then image a but we recently did Tenerife and Lanzarote. Lanzarote was it a bit windy when we were there. We had a villa in Playa Blanca which made it nicer.

For days out we did Karting, the Lagoma House, the caves tour, the volcanoes, and visited one not in the park, which was a Dr Who set!

It wasn't too bad, but Tenerife was better. In both you just need to avoid the chavs, and get out to see more of what the island has to offer.

We are going in October half term, never been to this island but am looking forward to getting away to do nothing for a week. We are staying in Playa Blanca, all inclusive at the Elba Royal village resort.

I am not expecting much other than a pool, beer and a few rides on the mountain bike, sound like if I want any thing else I will be disappointed after reading this thread!

Anyone happen to have any mountain bike routes on garmin or strava?

I doubt you'll be disappointed. You're going to the right resort at the right time for the right reasons.

Quite a lot of cycling done around Lanzarote but i cant personally comment as i dont partake.

Heading out very soon ourselves. Cant wait beer

Heading there in April next year, week after half term thankfully.

Playa de lol Poscillos, just 9 mins from the airport and near the other places.

We’ve been to Furteventura twice and enjoyed it. We mostly just sit around by the pool and walk with our daughter so we’re looking forward to it.

Let us know how you get on, we have that on our shortlist for next March, we normally change between princess yaiza and White suites but Elba looks nice although it's set back from the road towards the other end of the town.

Bike wise, there are quite a number of the trikes that you pedal with your hands, I don't think there are many specialist bike shops, I seem to remember there are a couple that advertise in hotels and deliver the bike to you

Car hire I would recommend plus car, cheap and no insurance excess, some cars can be a little bit used though.

@Dameon, small world, the jungle bar has changed over the years but is a good place to people watch, casale Franco above near Burger King does great pizzas. As for ice house, did you go when Simon owned it ? I'm sure the burgers were better.

We used AutoReisen last time - the office is right beside the baggage reclaim belts so you can do that when you await your bags. £110 for 12 days hire of a Polo sized car with air con. No excesses, no mandatory "extras"

We only really discovered Ice House a couple of visits ago. Its the first bar we "hit" on our walk down from the villa we rent, so we generally stop there for a drink or two. Havent yet tried the food there as we generally walk on in to the main resort, but we plan to this time. Will have a look for Casale Franco when we are there.

10 days and counting! beer

Car booked a long time ago, we always use holiday autos to book, good prices, and a good broker in my experience.

For some reason though, I just re ran a quote for our trip in 4 weeks time and it had dropped £70 from £149 which wasnt expensive for a focus size car from hertz in the first place.

Just went online to cancel and it let me take the better deal in the cancellaton process, have rebooked with hertz for the same car £70 on its way back to my account.

You wouldnt get that many places these days, nice!!!
