As per the title really!

We are going to have a couple days in Mexico City on the way somewhere else - any recommendations for stuff to see (and places to eat) would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I have a friend staying with me at present who lives in Mexico City, I showed her this thread and below is her ideas biggrin

There are many neighbourhoods all are different and depend on your personal preferences. My suggestion is to take the 'Turibus' first, it is the easiest way to sightsee the city and you can choose which places you want to visit.

My personal suggestions are: Downtown Hotel Terrace (located in Dowtown) have a peaceful drink and enjoy the chaos of the city below.
There are also a couple of restaurants close to this place where you can eat: 'Limosneros', 'Cafe Tacuba' or ' El Cardenal'

If you want to eat as a local, try restaurant franchises: 'Casa de Tono' or 'Potzocalli'.

Take a tour to Teotihuacan or Puebla but bear in mind its a full day for each,

Otherwise, visit 'Coyoacan' or 'San Angel' neighborhoods. (San Angel has a nice open market on a Sunday)
If you go Coyoacan try to eat at 'La Coyoacana', 'Corazon de Maguey', 'Moheli' or have a coffee in 'El Jarocho'. The house of Frida Kalho is also in this neighborhood.

Dont forget to try Mezcal (similar to Tequilla) or local beer brands 'Victoria', 'Indio' or 'Leon'

Prime and Wine - steaks served by busty wenches. Live music.

The Palm - top notch steak house in the hotel presidente.

Xochimilco - the remaining part of Aztec Mexico, a water world of floating rafts, flowers and mariachis.

The Anthropological Museum

Teotihuacan

Traffic is horrendous - plan accordingly

The air quality is appalling, the sewerage system just pumps the stuff out into the desert to dry, and if the wind is in the wrong direction, dried stuff gets blown back into the city. They have an 'airborne fecal matter' index like the UK has a pollen index. I st you not.

Of all on my list, Xochimilco provides the most 'authentic' Mexican experience.

Thanks - we've now had to change our plans and are now only spending 1 night in Mexico at the airport as our flight arrives late in the evening and we are booked on another fight early the following day.

Thread bump - I am considering going to Mexico City over the Christmas break to escape the UK, watching Rick Stein's latest Mexican series giving me the idea of going. I've been to Mexico before, visiting Baja California with an ex a few years ago for a few nights, but I didn't really feel I experienced the true Mexico, or good food (I had better Mexican food in the US when I was spending a lot of time there), so want to make amends.

I feel I'll get bored spending 7-8 nights Mexico City, so if I was going to get a rental car and do a 3 night road trip, what tips do people have? Which regions do I want to avoid? Which regions would be a must see?

I know a couple of the posters above recommended it but I've done Xochimilco and it is a good day/evening out, a few chilled drinks on your own private colourful raft, bumping your way down the river, chatting to other boats, buying street food from floating vendors etc, very cool.
