Aren't BA and AA both part of the one world alliance group? You could book your flight with AA and still end up on a BA aircraft.
Yes we booked our 5 flight trip via AA but specifically selected the flights based on time fully aware of which carrier and which type we'd be flying on. Google flights is very good for this.We did an ex EU trip flying CDG-LHR (BA A320), LHR-MIA (BA A388), MIA-PAP and PAP-MIA (AA B752) and MIA-LHR (AA B77W) all for £1100 in business.

Yes booked via BA, however booking says.... BA1528

It's actually AA39. I think if you use your BA record locator you should be able to log on and select your seats for free for the AA leg, I may be wrong about this but worth a try. The 77W has a mini business cabin just behind the first cabin that only has 8 seats in it. We sat in 3D and 3G and it was very peaceful. With a maximum of 16 passengers sat in front of the doors there's very little foot traffic. The main business cabin has 44 seats so worth getting the seats up front if you can!American Airlines | Business | Confirmed

Which is preferable? I've been avoiding US airlines for years, but are BA any better?
Not any more in Business. They are widely seen as lagging behind. BA introduced the first ever lie flat business class around 20 years ago. They still use the same design and layout to a large degree, and have slimmed down the soft product (the service) too. The US carriers have fought hard to catch up and overtake.
Your mileage may vary in the back depending on new/old plane with the US carriers. With BA, if it's a business destination then generally the planes in economy are acceptable (again, the soft product is lacking). US carriers can and do use old 757/767s on some routes (shudder).
Look at Youtube trip reports. This one is for AA38 (Miami to London) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DMIJfgim5Y
If this is the same as the other AA service (BA 1526?) and it's a 77W, then the business class is one of the best in the sky, far better than BA Club world and only matched by some of the middle eastern airlines. I am flying out early August and ensured I booked the AA metal over the BA option.
