Hi,

I normally use Waze if I need a navigation, but have a last minute need to drive in Norway and have multiple locations to visit for a family wedding.

Is Google maps offline downloads good enough if I know the areas? Or anyone recommend any apps? If not free then reasonably priced. smile

Thanks

Why use it offline? If you have a data plan it's included in the new EU roaming legislation.

My bad. I'd forgotten about that. For some reason I also thought Norway wasn't in Three's list of countries. Cheers lol

I'd certainly use something with speed cameras showing. You do NOT want to be caught speeding in Norway. ($$$$)

Thanks for the heads up. I'll be using Waze so hopefully that's updated. From what I understand most things are expensive so can't be affording that. smile

While Norway IS in Three's list of 'at home' countries, I've found that coverage can be patchy in some areas (especially around the Alps, but that's likely a geographical and topographical issue rather than technical).

If travelling in a foreign country or anywhere I think I might not get a signal for whatever reason, I still prefer to have offline maps so use Sygic

Thanks for the heads up regarding Three. It's not the best at times and with the change in roaming I'll probably be moving networks as the advantage of Three for me was the cheap plan I was on, with unlimited data and free roaming when in Ireland, which was usually three times a year.

It's not limited to Three. I know others on UK networks who struggle with coverage in other countries and often have to end up playing with carrier selection to get the best signal in an area. I'm sure if you live there, it's not an issue as you know what's good where you live, but if you're travelling about it does seem to be more hit and miss when you're outside urban areas or larger populated areas

Waze doesn't pick up on the mobile speed traps which cost me a 5 month ban and an £700 fine for a minor speeding offence.

Lucky it wasn't a major speeding offence - mandatory 18 day jail sentence!

Here we go app allows you to download offline map. I use it for Canada and Iceland when I am there.

There's a pretty decent breakdown of their fine structure here

Thank you for all the replies regarding navigation and speeding.

Whilst I have you here, anything else to watch out for? First time visiting and driving there. I'm comfortable driving on the left, or the right, but always nice to have a heads up.

Cheers beer

Yep - average speed cameras aren't marked. In fact, they're hidden. E18 down to Kristiansand, take a bow.

The sheer volume of Teslas will blow your mind.

Here maps worked for me when I visited my daughter and son last year, drove oslo, kristiansund, Trondheim, stavanger, so all/most of south/mid Norway pop found my son's new house in stavanger no problem. I'd worry about the wedding, speeches never end, I put a formal time limit on the speeches at my wedding, don't forget your duty trees.

I live in Norway, Google Maps is fine, Apple Maps is literally useless in Norway.

On the motorway 110 km/h limit 130 is typical drivers upper limit // 100 km/h limit, you'll be OK at 120 km/h

There aren't enough Police, they very rarely Police the speed on motorways apart from outside major towns in rush hour. I literally couldn't tell you the last time I saw a marked car unless it was responding to an accident. Also the next two weeks are still peak summer holidays, less traffic.

Leave distance behind trucks, especially tippers as they throw up stones like you wouldn't believe, I have an insurance policy which allows a 'free' screen every year... which I end up using.

A lot of sections of motorway have 'tram tracks' from heavy truck wear, on gentle sweeping curves your car can actually follow them, which is fun .. but can be dangerous. I've seen a biker spat off on one of these.

In a 60 around 40 metres from the 80 zone and sped up to 82 to overtake some drip dawdling along and they were hidden in a bush in the central reservation, I was speeding, lesson learnt. Still a bitter pill to swallow.

They very rarely like to use indicators, they will pull out in front of you in a 50 and slowly build up speed to 40 and they will cut you up without notice.

Just wanted to say thank you for all the assistance. Unfortunately we wasn't there as long as we would have liked due to a change of circumstances.

We plan to return and have a holiday there. Beautiful country, lots of Teslas and from what I can tell a great life satisfaction for those that live there. I'm aware that holidays/trips are different to living somewhere, but was nice.

The day of the wedding we sat down for dinner at 6pm and it wasn't finished until 11pm. Some of the speeches were in Norwegian for traditional purposes so were hard to follow, but a good time was had.

Driving was a challenge due to following my partners relatives who knew where they were going and didn't seem fazed by the speeding fines as much as I was. Be the same as me whizzing around the west of Ireland which I know very well. Or them driving down the A406/A13 in London.

Regarding Sygic on iOS they're offering world navigation and traffic for £25.99 and without traffic for £17.99. I'll order without traffic as it'll be handy for being on holiday anywhere without data, or in non EU countries.
