I just had a look on the map. Given the size of Blackpool, how come it justifies having its own motorway to connect it to the M6? Is that just to allow people to run away faster?
Visit Britain says Blackpool is the UK’s most popular seaside destination, with 8.6 million day visits generating £406m. It's also the largest town in Lancashire, with a population of over 140,000.

Blackburn's the second largest, but it's a stehole too. And I say that with it being my hometown.

I'd stay in Lytham and then visit Blackpool (briefly) from there.
Best advice I've seen on here for a long time , my missus asked if we could go there for a weekend , I took her for the day and she was ready to leave after an hour !

Quite right. I spent a week there one afternoon. Never again.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll look into those hotels.

We're not snobs by any means, but we live in Kent and most of our costal towns are pretty dire. I imagine Blackpool is similar only more popular!

If we're going to make the trip then I'd at least like to stay somewhere nice as it's very rare that we get a weekend away.

If we travel up on the Friday and do Blackpool on Saturday, what's worth visiting on the Sunday. Could be anywhere on the route back to Kent.

It's more commonly known as the Geordie - Glaswegian Las Vegas , and I'm from the north east . I've been a few times in my youth , hence why when asked if we could go there I advised a day trip as it's only an hour or so up the road from where I now live .
It's just a typical run down seaside resort that benefits from easy road access .

I've done Blackpool at least once a year since 76 and worked there for 3 months in 97.
Stayed in many B&B's mostly clean and ok.
I have stayed at the Village several times near the Zoo lovely but out the way. Lions roaring nearby in the morning was unreal.

Hilton many times on North Promenade, very nice but out the way a bit if walking.
Last 10 years always at The Big Blue, superb Hotel especially with Pleasure Beach view if requested.
The breakfast is outstanding and the Restaurant is even more, world class food at nominal prices. Room service too is very good.
Its the 'Ian Botham' of Blackpool Hotels for me, does everything....

Sandcastle indoor water park opposite Pleasure Beach and Big Blue Hotel is fantastic, tram pick up outside.
Regular do NY, Vegas and Florida but love Blackpool especially the Rollercoasters. Never grown up!!!

I suggest you watch Benidorm which is Blackpool with sun.
Honestly a 100 times bigger and better than Margate or Ramsgate , enjoybiggrin

I live here and yes it has its run down sides but I love it.

The De Vere Village hotel is nice and about a mile from the front. I live on the development and it's well kept. Indoor and outdoor pools, great golf course, nice walks around its perimeter and decent bars and other bits.

Big Blue is great and in the action in South Shore right on the Pleasure Beach.

The Hilton is good but a bit out of town, nothing a 10-minute tram ride won't sort.

The Imperial is an old classic but showing its age now.

Loads of decent B&B's to choose from, just follow Tripadvisor and you won't go wrong.

Bars are lively, lots of stag and hen parties and people generally enjoying themselves. Some don't like that but it is what it is. Beach House on the prom is probably the nicest and usually, stag/hen free, some Irish bars are particularly rowdy so I'd avoid these if that's not your scene. Hogarth's gin palace is right in the town centre but not known on the stag and hen circuit so mostly quite respectable, cheap as chips too. Ma Kelly's, on Talbot Road, is an institution and a riot, I was in there yesterday at 7pm, it was like being in Benidorm at 2am, mega busy and loads of characters. It was a mad house, give it a go you will be amazed.

I wouldn't come all that way for one night, you're probably better doing two. Me and the misses played holiday makers yesterday, the tower alone needs nearly a full day. Blackpool Dungeon first, then nearly two hours in the circus, a couple of pints in the beautiful ball room then up the tower. Over the road to the comedy carpet and Beach House to watch the sunset.

The Pleasure Beach is another full day if you do it right.

It's a Victorian seaside town so looking a bit worn around the edges but that's part of the charm. Come with the right attitude, up for some fun and you will get it. Come looking down on it and it's people and you will probably hate it. If you want culture, museums and fine dining it isn't for you. If you want a bit of harmless Northen fun, with no airs and graces, you will have a great time.

If you need any advice or help when you're here let me know, we are a friendly bunch up here.

PS. Whilst you're here check out house prices, you will be amazed.

PPS. Hipsters are barred so don't be coming dressed like something out of YMCA.

I'd go the Lake District. Windermere or Keswick.
It is one hour north of Blackpool though.
Stay in the lakes Friday night?

The Village Hotel is a business class hotel, spa and conference centre on the edge of Blackpool. It seems to get decent reviews.

I use this hotel for work occasionally when I fly from the heliport at Blackpool and its nice enough and I am sure you would have a comfortable stay. Not cheap.

I was in Blackpool few months ago after about a 30 year gap since I was there as a kid and as much as I loved it when I was a kid its not a place id take my family now sadly.

I can see that a lot of money has been spent on the seafront and its clean with nice sculptures but the rest is a bit tatty and apart from the worlds largest (?) Wetherspoons there isnt much else...

Don't forget the Winter gardens in the town centre , a superb theatre beautifully renovated, hosting many shows and bars .
http://www.wintergardensblackpool.co.uk/visitor-in...

The impressive Stanley Park with a period Cafe serving good food adjacent to the main entrance car park.
http://www.parksartdecocafe.co.uk/

As you take in the the sea air on probably the most entertaining promenades in the UK ,indulge yourselves at Notariannis Ice Cream http://notarianni.co.uk/

For the Ladies the World class Ice Show and Tower Ballrooom will earn you valuable brownie points...Enabling you to visit the historic site of TVR production on Bristol Ave, or maybe some of the fine collection of trams (not sure about arranged visits to those)

If Blackpool is a little tacky as regards hotels , as others have said St Annes is 2 mins.

All in all something for everyone...As for the detractors, I'd be curious to see what seaside town in the UK they would recommend . wink
