It seems over the past 10 years or so that i have bought my dream car (at that particular price point) and it's going to be 'a keeper'.... only it isn't. It Lasts a while and then a new 'dream car' appears (even to the point where it's been the same model just a different colour!).

My (no doubt suffering) wife has commented that I had more cars in the first 2 years than she's ever owned (at that point we were both just over 50). and yet I show no signs of settling down with 'the one'.

Latest case in point I have (IMO) an amazing, lightly modified, excellent condition SLK55 which has got performance, presence, comfort... pretty much everything I could ask of a car. Upon picking it up I loved this car (and truth be told I still do, it ticks every box) and was going to keep it for quite some time. Yet now I'm thinking about selling it. For a car that will, by all logic, be a far worse car - but it's my new 'dream car' (2004 Mach 1).

Am I alone in this affliction or are there others on here who understand this switching of affections?

Nothing wrong with changing cars if you can afford it but a 2004 Mach 1? WTF?

Variety is the spice of life.
If you can afford it do it.

I think I can see the problem.

Although you've owned a number of American cars you've never yet owned a Corvette.... driving

You're not alone, although I don't delude myself into believing any of my cars will be "keepers"...

Most of my cars tend to last around 6 months to a year. Longest I kept a car was a year and a half. So many cars, so little time.

I don't understand how people can continue to keep run of the mill, boring cars, year after year. My neighbour has an early mk1 focus estate. He's had it from new and has no intention of ever changing it. It's a poverty spec 1.6 petrol. I don't get it. I can't understand how he couldn't be bored of it.

Maybe if it was something a little exciting, I could understand wanting to keep hold of a car, but when there's always something different to try, why not?

Even though I've only been driving 7 years I have owned 6 Cars and will be getting my 7th in January when I have had this a 12 full months. It just gets boring driving the same car I don't think i would ever be happy unless I could run 2-3 cars at the same time for some variety but obviously I can't afford to buy and insure that many.
I will never understand people who keep cars say 5 years+ they are normally the most boring poverty spec cars that make you think why?
Although if I bought a brand new car that I could keep immaculate I think i would last longer maybe 3 years lol

I’ve had my car 3 years, I’ve always wanted a Supercharged Civic Type R and now I have one....

But I’m always looking for the next ‘forever car’ and then talk myself into buying something, then I don’t hehe

I really could not be bothered to change my car every two minutes like some people on here. I've had my Monaro for over 10 yrs and have no plans to sell it anytime soon. If you have a good car why change it just for the sake of it?

A Monaro is a little different though. It's something a little bit special. Something worth keeping and looking after. Now if it was a Vectra..

You're obviously happy with the Monaro, which is great. But, many suffer with the 'itch' & have to scratch it. Even if the car they're running satisfies their needs, may be reliable & ticks the boxes, the excitement & experience of getting in an alternative is something that has to be addressed. Good job too, I say.

I used to go through lots of cars but in the last few years I have gone the total opposite,
I bought my e46 touring 3 years ago and pretty much regretted it 3 months in, I still don’t really love it but we’ll over 100 thousand miles later and a list as long as your arm of faults that have been rectified then worn out again, I can’t find anything to replace it with, I don’t like vag stuff
I don’t like new bmw’s, I don’t want an auto gearbox and I don’t want a diesel, I have become to fussy, there isn’t to much left for me to buy, all the old stuff I would buy is now stupid money or completely knackered, my megane rs is now 7 years old and I just have not got bored of it, the replacement is not here yet and the competition isn’t to my taste in some way or other,
I’d love an xjr-6 but it would be a bit greedy for the daily commute but I’ve wanted one for an absolute age and always keep my eye on the market for them, I grew up loving old xj’s and had several series cars at 19 years of old and a xj40 and x300 later on. my car searching now has become an epidemic of let downs and depression of finding not what I want,
I have reached my midlife crisis but for a different reason, But that turquoise xjr-6
Keeps on tapping on my shoulder every week I think about it, and that with a unhealthy appetite for wanting something carlton gsi or old cavaliers I think I’m going insane,
I can’t get old run of the mill cars out of my head
We’re is my mk2 cavalier cd I never owned
Or the Isuzu piazza turbo I once nearly bought and now would love one, and meanwhile my poor tvr is just sat in the garage doing nothing
It’s been quite some time since it’s turned a wheel I think I’m beyond going mad

I've always been a bit like that myself!

As soon as I bought my dream car I'd start working out what would be next!

Probably why I've averaged 18 months ownership (16 cars in 31 years).

Then in 2004 I got a car allowance because I had to do business miles so for a decade I had 2 nearly new 4 cylinder turbo-diesels.

When that ended in 2014 I discovered what I really should have had all along - naturally aspirated petrol straight 6 loveliness with a manual gearbox!

I've had my current two for 3 years now, and have no plans to change - it's a format nobody makes any more.

Mind you once V8 Mustang prices drop a bit I may change my mind. laugh

All of my keepers are long gone.

My Capri’s - 1.6S, 3.0S, 2.8i, my TR6 &, my biggest regret, my E36 BMW 318is.

Because you could replace it with something that is even better?

If you try other things and dismiss them I would understand your view, but to say it's because you can't be bothered seems a bit daft to me?

I've had my C36 for eleven years or so now, so it's a keeper.

It's great, of course it is, otherwise I wouldn't have it.

However it's not my only car, and the novelty and romance is kept alive by me garaging it between October and April. When it gets wheeled out into the spring sunshine, the good times begin again.

There must be a formula applicable to a car remaining with an enthusiast for any length of time. It must fit in with the lifestyle and real-world requirements of the owner, and it mustn't demand an unreasonable percentage of the owners disposable income. It must continue to surprise and delight, and must never be boring.

Not much to ask really....

I hate the process of buying and especially selling and make darn sure the car is worth the hassle because it will be with me for a long time.
