As has been mentioned, The Shangri-La is a good option and I can recommend the Krungthep Wing (guests of the Krungthep Wing can use both of the pools, compared to guest of the main hotel who only get to use the Shangri-La pool).
Another option is the COMO Metropolitan Bangkok which houses the Michelin star Nahm restaurant. The pool at the Metropolitan is excellent, but possibly a bit poserish.
Conrad is quite nice but more of a business hotel. The Holiday Inn on Ploenchit Road is an excellent option if you want easy access to the air-conditioned malls.
The best of them all is the Mandarin Oriental, but it's far from cheap.
Regarding transport to and from the airport. We always grab an AOT Limousine which can be hired from the baggage claim area of the airport. It's approx 1,500 baht for the 45 minute journey from the airport to the centre of BKK.

Flights booked. 4nights in BKK on way back from Oz.
Thinking of anantara riverside but not sure if location is too far out
still looking at other options.

Lovely hotel. You can get the free river boat about the place too.
I think it's a great choice.
