Always prefer around Midtown to stay.
A good base to go anywhere wether walking or Grayline open top buses etc

Stayed at :
Park Central, ok

Plaza, ok

Renaissance Times Square, superb

New Yorker, good

The Crowne Plaza Times Square this Summer for 7 days, a friend recently stayed was very impressed so going to try, otherwise would have booked the Marriott Marquis.

Another friend recently stayed in Brooklyn for a first time 3 day trip, but regretted not staying in Manhattan.

Whatever you do don’t stay at the Americano. It’s crap!

For work I usually stay at boutique hotels and like the Chandler which is on E31st, not far from the Empire State Building. Cozy but ask for a room at the back as it’s quieter.

I even found a picture from a previous stay! smile

I'd recommend the Novotel just off Times Square. Great location and value. Maybe a little below your budget, but def worth considering.
We stayed there last March, nothing really special but a good enough central base for all the touristy things we had planned, Breakfast was comically expensive but there was a cracking deli/café across the road that became our regular. smile

The view from the bar/restaurant. wink

I've stayed at the Novotel, Times Sq., before. I was on business. I had a room on about the 15th floor, and when I wanted to leave for a morning meeting, each lift that stopped at 15 was already full with tourists. I had to take a lift UP to get down, or walk 15 floors! Breakfast was rubbish - and expensive - as noted above.

I like the Roxy on 6th Ave., just where 6th/Broadway join. Boutique hotel. Nicely done.

The Library Hotel on Lexington (?) had THE smallest rooms ever! Roofbar was always rammed with non-guests. rolleyes

Recently stayed at Westin Grand Central. Was a nice hotel, but a business hotel it seemed. Rooms were great though and price was excellent. A 2 min walk to Grand Central and then everywhere in NYC is a tube trip away.

Have also stayed at the following: The Kitano (Midtown), The Roosevelt (Midtown) and Millennium Hilton (Downtown). All nice hotels, stayed in a suite at the Hilton though so that was really plush, just a bit far away from everything unfortunately.

Stayed at the New York Edition this summer. Very nice and couldn't find a fault to be honest (apart from it's quite pricey). Smells wonderful too....!

I'd also put in a recommendation for Hotel Indigo on Lower East Side.

Subway straight from JFK, great area, easy to get anywhere from here.

I checked in here today- good staff, nice rooms, nice bar. Nicer than the intercontinental barclay. Not quite as nice as the New York edition hotel.

But very very noisy- constant noise of traffic and sirens from Times Square!

We've just booked a corner room for New Year this year. The photos off the website look very Hilton to me.
As others have said we want something clean and comfortable as wont be spending much time in the room.

New Yorker was alright when we stayed, nothing special but it was clean and there was a spot on diner next door.

Yup, very nice, pricey, roof top bar. I would stay again but make sure if you are on the entrance street side you stay higher than the 3rd floor - the trucks and cars are very loud there!

Dream Midtown is OK, rooms are patheticly small , but the rooftop bar is good - you can do a lot better.

Lower East is where its at right now...try and look for something around that part of the city - thats where I will stay next time

I've just returned from the Intercontinental, no complaints, excellent location 5 minutes away from Times Square .

Great views from the rooms;
