Following on from the other thread, my favourite holiday destination(s) is/are...

Naples/Marco Island, Florida - I know some people scoff at those who return to the same destination, but this works for us; great weather, beaches, Mustang convertible, shopping, nice villa(s), decent restaurants and friendly locals. Heading back in April and can't wait!

Nice. We normally head in September when the hotel is cheaper and go for a business class room with sea views at the Radisson Bleu - the weather is still lovely, food is great, and having a pool at the hotel is a bonus, and just a short flight from Edinburgh.

New Orleans. It’s a dump but it’s got so much going on, the music, the food, the people. Love it.

I’m also a big fan of San Antonio and Austin but NOLA beats them both as a tourist.

Northern Italy. All of it. There just something about those regions that I adore, both the places themselves and the people. I’ll keep going back for the rest of my life.

Venice.
Went there with a girlfriend to meet up with her parents for their wedding anniversary.
My motives were driven purely by Brownie points at first but I ended up wishing we had longer there.
There's just something about the canals and the surrounding buildings that has a natural aesthetic quality about it.

Italy.

After a working life travelling and holidaying anywhere but Europe, we have had a holiday in Italy for each of the past 12 years, usually somewhere different every time. We cannot get enough of the country!

Other than that, our best memories are of Aruba, Papua New Guinea, Penang and North Eastern USA (area above Boston to the Canadian border)

Iceland. I like a nice bit of mountain scenery and it's bloody stunning. Been 3 times, would happily go back again.

EL Chalten in Patagonia and the trek to Mount Fitzroy. Utterly stunning scenery the whole way, great exercise and the lagoon at the base of the mountain is one of the most stunning places on earth. By far the most rewarding day of travelling I have ever done.

Corsica

First went when I was 18, then lived there for 5 years, met my wife, and have been back a few times since - golden beaches with gnarly 3k mountains a stones throw away. Planning another trip to do the GR20 next year. Utterly gorgeous place.

Norwegian coast & Fjords on the Hurtigruten but on the more classical / older working ships rather than the more moderns cruise liners.

Lovely people, incredible food, stunning beaches, lush jungle, fascinating culture and sightseeing, monkeys and elephants, cheap as chips, and you can get a really really good cup of tea.

Nothing special at all but a carefully chosen location well away from all the hordes of beer and bingo and chips Chavs in the Canary Islands anytime in the depths of a wet miserable UK winter tops the list for reward vs cost for me over and over again.

California - So much variety.

England & Wales - no smaller areas has as varied landscape and we underrate it massively.

New York City in February.

We've done this 7 or 8 times since 2003 and to this day I just don't understand why it's so quiet (I'm not complaining!) I pressed my folks to do it after previous summer trips and they've said they'll never go at another time of year again.

- It's by far the driest month of the year
- In 30+ days across those trips 90% have been beautiful crisp blue skies. We had our first ever rain this time, a whole two hours of it.
- It's staggeringly quiet. Straight up Top of the Rock, straight over to Liberty Island etc etc. Valentine's day aside we've never queued for anything.
- Flights and hotels can be relatively cheap
- Yes it's often cold, but it's comfortable enough to walk everywhere. We've covered 50+ miles in a few days.
- The locals seem far more relaxed and welcoming, particularly if you have kids as there are so few about.

Stayed in the Hilton on marco island a good few times and loved it but I prefer fort Myers beach any day.

Loads of bars and restaurants within a 5 minuet walk from our hotel.
Going back this summer.

Nepal.

Fantastic people; cheap, and the short(ish) trek to the Annapurna Sanctuary is awe inspiring.
