When I first visited Lands End in the 1960's, it was completely unspoiled, a small carpark, tranquillity and views out to sea.

These days, it is the site of a concrete monstrosity, a mish mash of tacky tourist shops, a blot on the landscape.

Time is far better spent visiting the magnificent Minack Theatre three or four miles away

Do you not see the potential irony in your suggestion wink

Land's end probably only got to be the way it is now because people said:

"go and visit lands end - it's tranquil and unspoilt"

......so loads of people did biggrin

The problem with "tranquil and unspoilt" is that it usually stops being the case as soon as you throw people into the mix.

Well yes, I appreciate it's catch 22, but I'm sure they could have come up with something a bit more pleasing to the eye....

That theatre looks great.

Lands end looks rubbish, if you’re going to tourist it up at least have some cool stuff like a cable car or some kind of scary walkway on glass or a bungee jump?

If it’s the end of the land, there ought to be a sense of danger and a realistic possibility that you could fall off somehow. hehe

This may be a shock, but LE is a business and is making more money now than it ever has (so I'm told).

The hotel is lovely, the food is superb and they do have some good stuff there (the Farm is great for kids) as well as the veiws.

Yes there's donuts for sale, gift shop etc, but it was hardly ever the Mecca of Culture in Cornwall TBH.

There is no shortage of tranquil places to sit and look out to sea in Cornwall (and Devon).
Why not concentrate the naffness in one place so the rest of us can avoid it?

Lizard Point is much less so.
A few touristy shoppes in the village but kind of old fashioned.
Even an honesty box for parking!

I wonder what people said about that compared to what was there before when it was built? biggrin

Minack is well worth a visit, we went last year. Stayed in a campsite a couple of miles away and booked a taxi for there and back. Took a picnic and a bottle of wine and had a great evening. Far better than the tack-fest that is Land’s End which is probably the only properly spoilt bit of the far end of Cornwall.

An awesome place, enjoyable regardless of the play being performed.

Something special about watching an open air performance with the sea in the background whilst tucking into a picnic!

Despite living in Cornwall I have never been to Lands End.
I tell a lie, I did venture there once many years ago, made it to the carpark entrance, discovered what they wanted to charge and quickly turned around and left, and headed for nearby Sennen Cove.
Just as dramatic up on the headland and a lovely walk round the coast to.........

Lands End.

I opened this thread expecting it to be about coastal erosion.

If people are vising Minack, then remember the Porthcurno Cable Museum is literally a stone's throw away.

I was last there in 2003. From what I can remember it was about half way between the two sates mentioned by the OP. I think it's a case of going so you can tick it off the list. If you walk along the coastal paths away from the main attraction it's very pleasant but the venue itself is, inevitably, geared up towards the predictable influx of identikit families in their leased SUVs. Minack, as others have said, is lovely. A friend who's an amateur actor was fortunate enough to perform there last year.

Walk over from Sennon Cove. Have a mooch and a coffee, nice meals at the bar, then wander back. Afternoon killed easy there with some nice coastal views if the weather is nice.

Sounds great, and might I add, a vivid and emotive description by you sidicks that makes me want to visit.

I didn’t even know it existed.

And not far from the Minack, the Telegraph museum at Porthcurno. Take the Mrs, she will love you forever for that.

I thought it was brilliant.
