As per the title, has anyone used Airbnb in New York specifically?

5 of us are going and for less than the outlay on 3 hotel rooms we can get a decent apartment - thinking Brooklyn at the moment as we've stayed in Manhattan previously.

Seems to be lots of scaremongering online about it being illegal in NYC, building managers having powers to turf out tenants, but no real tales of experiences.

Any positive or negative feedback, or dos and donts to ensure what we book is going to be there and available for us to use when we arrive?

TIA

ETA arse, posted in wrong forum...could a nice mod move pls smile

Check out the Freehand Hotel, 4 of us travelling to NYC in October/November and booked a premium quadruple room. They also do triple and doubles so might be worth checking them out.

We stayed in Harlem two years ago - Studio apartment for 70 USD/night. Absolutely no problems.
Hotels in Manhattan were in the region of 200 USD/night!

The subway runs 24/7 and the locals were helpful when we were lost late at night - Convent avenue if I remember correctly.

I have, and it is illegal - at least for the host.

We rented a place in the Lower East Side. Our host asked us to pretend we were friends staying over. To maintain this fiction she was over all the time, and generally being quite annoying, despite the fact it was supposed to be the rental of the entire apartment.

I think next time I'll get a hotel.

Watching 'Rip off Britain-Holidays' this morning it was all about Airbnb, it seems a lot more places around the globe (or all across the land if you are a FE) are clamping down on Airbnb and introducing strict rules and guidelines...

I forgot I started this thread.

Yeah, in light of the above we ended up booking the Franklin Guesthouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

Highly recommend staying outside Manhattan now, and with lower costs you dont need to risk air b n b.

Stayed at a fantastic apartment in Jersey City last year sourced through Air BnB and will actively look to do the same again next time I go.

This one in fact.

Well recommended, cost around £700 for the week, a sum which wouldn't have come close to getting 3 of the most average hotel rooms on Manhattan itself, gave us the freedom of self-catering with the convenience of being steps from the tram to get into the city.
