Was wandering around St Tropez today and looking at the yachts in the harbour. I looked a few up on google, and as far as I can see they are pretty much all either for sale or available for charter. Does anyone actually privately own any of them, and is chartering yachts at £100k a week that big a business that it can support that many yachts?

If they are up for charter a number of ownership/running costs can be offset against the tax bill....having incredibly high prices puts off the hirers while still allowing cost-write off...

I imagine if you own one chartering helps with the costs. If you can't afford to own one you can still charter one.

Have a look out of the marina, you might see some big ones on anchor!

They are all owned (though not directly) by someone. There are no charter-ownership companies (like Avis yachts) as they simply would not make money. Chartering even full time would not completely offset the running of the vessel, and increases the wear and tear considerably. Some owners choose to offset some of the costs by chartering them out to other people, usually through an agent (YCO, Edmiston etc.). Yachts around the 50m mark charter for around 250,000EUR/week excluding food and fuel. Bigger yachts cost significantly more and some are now chartering over 1M/week.

The tax implications are neither here nor there for the bigger boats. Money tends not to be a problem. We still pay full VAT on everything.

Some of the owners are household names - but not many. Most are fairly anonymous politicians and businessmen. Privacy is a huge part of our industry.

My brother works for Edmiston.

The skipper of this one is a fairly regular poster on PH forums, AFAIK

My bro told me last year they were renting a superyacht to a businessman for his summer hols. The deal was all sorted, and the owner was of course kept private. But the owner somehow found out somehow (social circles) and realised the renter was a mate of his..... so he decided the rental should be free.......

only the broker (and Edmiston) wasn't too happy about this nil rate rental as he was working on commission.... so they had to renegotiate just for the broker's commission
