Sixt Lucky Dip

Flew to Calgary a couple of years ago with the mrs, we were driving over to Vancouver across the rockies, ordered a Jeep Cherokee, they didn’t have one but said you can have a Dodge Durango, great I thought , never heard of that one! Turns out when we got to it was a brand new 5.7l hemi engined luxury suv, what a vehicle for a couple in their mid 20’s to drive couple of thousand km’s across Canada!
Booked a corvette convertible through the hertz Jan sale a few years ago for a Ca roadtrip starting in SF.
On arrival no vette and asked to take a Camaro SS Covertible that was brand new. Took it for 48hrs and then went back for the vette and glad I did.
They threw in a tank of gas and all tolls paid for the inconvenience...

Booked a focus auto or similar from Sixt in France and lady at the desk tried to get me to upgrade to a BMW 2 series, only an extra £70. I said no and then offered me it for £50. Again I declined so we went through all the bits and bobs and off I went to get the car....which was a BMW 2 series anyway lol.

I've got a car booked in Italy this weekend.
The email from the UK agent stated "VW Golf or similar". However, when I got the confirmation from the local car hire firm, this had changed to "Alfa Giulietta or similar".
I'm hoping for the Alfa!
So, when I arrived I was offered a Golf, and she said "Is that OK?", so I asked "What else have you got?"The email from the UK agent stated "VW Golf or similar". However, when I got the confirmation from the local car hire firm, this had changed to "Alfa Giulietta or similar".

Ended up with a Jeep Renegade, which was perfect for the family.
Booked a mid sized convertible some years back with Hertz for a 3 week California Road trip. 2010 I think.
Queued for an hour in downtown SF and was finally given a 2009 Ford Expedition, which as the observant will have spotted is not convertible, and about as easy to drive and park as 2 Range Rovers welded in series.
Was told to report to the airport Hertz office where they had an Audi A4 convertible, in the class I booked etc. Wasted another hour getting over there and queuing.
Got a Jeep Wrangler 4.3lt
Which to be fair, made the holiday, including driving through Death Valley and down the strip in Vegas and was FAB
even though 4.3petrol engine made only 180bhp from memory

What's CDW & ALI?
Collision Damage Waiver & Additional Liability Insurance. The essential insurances.Terminology varies between companies, but the basics are the same.
CDW covers your car for damage, ALI/SLI covers what you hit.
PAI = Personal Accident Insurance, this covers you for your injuries (but your travel insurance should already be doing this, so you don't need it).
Americans often have some or all insurance provided by their normal vehicle insurer or credit card, hence they've got different types of insurance. Booking via SIXT's UK site automatically gives you full CDW and ALI/SLI with a zero excess option. I just rented a premium saloon (Merc/Volvo) in LA for 3 days in October for £100. Probably could have got it a 5 or 10 quid cheaper through a 3rd party but this is the peace of mind option in case I curb a wheel (which is the most likely issue when driving on the wrong side of the road).

Not exactly the same but many years ago my company Audi A4 was in for a repair and they sorted me a courtesy car.
Asked for my preference I said anything but a) not Japanese, b) a manual and c) not an estate
They turned up in a Toyota Camry auto estate, and were told to turn back
Kind of ironic that if you did drive a Toyota Camry Estate then it wouldn't have had to go anywhere near a garage for repairs.Asked for my preference I said anything but a) not Japanese, b) a manual and c) not an estate
They turned up in a Toyota Camry auto estate, and were told to turn back

Just a small caveat for anyone considering renting from Sixt in the US:
they impose geographical limitations on their rentals, usually limiting usage to the rental state & adjacent states. . . not much use if you want to do that one-in-a-lifetime mega road trip!
The only time I've used Sixt was many years ago on a business trip to Germany; we got an upgrade from an "Opel Vectra or similar" to a brand new Mercedes 190.

For my business trip car rentals, we're no longer allowed to upgrade, so no cheeky cars from Tampa Airport
Last few trips I've had the likes of a Q7 3.0T, a ChevyYukon, and a Cadillac STS 3.6, which was much, much better than I thought it would be!
Tampa last week - 3 of us on business. Car booked was a Kia Soul! Last few trips I've had the likes of a Q7 3.0T, a ChevyYukon, and a Cadillac STS 3.6, which was much, much better than I thought it would be!
Said sod it, took an upgrade and got an F-Pace.... Should have taken the Soul!
