I thought lucky dip was the default? They "upgraded" me from a "passat/large estate" to a 3 series estate once, and by "upgrade" I mean "there's the car take it or fkin leave it", which was annoying as we had booked a "large" estate for a reason

Someone else forget who at Marseille "upgraded" us from a twingo to a corsa as the twingo didn't have the AC specified, what a gutless souless wretched PoS that was, was south of France in summer but probably should have sweated it out.

On a related tack, when going to the U.S., I almost always use Dollar or Alamo, specifying sometimes luxury, sometimes “full size.”
On arrival at Fort Myers FL, Tampa FL, or Atlanta GA, they check the voucher and drivers licences, then say, “take whatever you like from the rows marked luxury or full size out back.”
If you fancy a Lincoln Town Car, jump in, if a Caddy Escalade, then take that if you went for luxury, full size? Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Chevy Impala, Nissan Maxima.
Yup. I go for the Alamo premium which is described as a Nissan Maxima or similar.

Past couple of times I've had a Challenger and Camero. I'm hoping for a Charger this time smile

Not exactly the same but many years ago my company Audi A4 was in for a repair and they sorted me a courtesy car.

Asked for my preference I said anything but a) not Japanese, b) a manual and c) not an estate
Just goes to illustrate different people’s preferences, I couldn’t care less where a rental car was made, and I’d rather have something mid size and up, but I’d pay over the top rather than have a manual.

This was 20 years ago, it was going to be an uninteresting 4 door saloon of some type (not an Impreza or a Supra) and autos were usually dull witted and performance sapping. I was about 25 and single, wtf do I want an estate car for?

Would never used sixt again. They took the Mick with some dodgy huge cleaning charges for our hire in Norway this year.

This was after their staff flatly refused to come out and inspect the car with us when we handed it back.

They also added other charges to the price quoted that weren’t mentioned when booking. People in our group who used a different company didn’t have those issues.

Went to Spain a few years ago. The flight was delayed, Airport was a ghost town late at night. I usually hired the smallest which was typically a Renault Twingo. Fine for popping up to see my Auntie 40 mins away. The chap opened the tiny car draw, they ran out. He'd also ran out of clean the next two level or car's, Ended up with the BMW 320i. Europcar I think. Other than that never had an upgrade.

On another note. Lad's work weekend to Andora from flight to Barcelona. We paid only €12 extra for no excess. (didn't trust the lad who was driving) on our Renault Espace. Good job we parked it in a designated spot and whilst avalanche crushed it and wrote if off. Copper said "It happens every year. We get them out in April when the snow melts" FFS don't put parking spots there! Didn't pay a penny and the hire car let us catch a cab to Barca Airport. That was AVIS

Luckiest I ever got was with Alamo in San Francisco. Had booked a fullsize car, described as a Ford Fusion Hybrid or similar and paid the extra £8 or whatever it was (ridiculously cheap anyway) for a full tank of fuel. Turned up at the depot which was in the basement of a multi-storey car park in the city centre, they radioed down from the office to the parking area looking for a car that actually had a full tank. After a bit of to-ing & fro-ing, I was asked if I would accept a Sports Car. After the obvious answer I was told that it was either that or a minivan as nothing else was fuelled & was given the keys to a Camaro. I was well pleased.

I booked a 3 series in Munich once & they apologised for not having one & would I mind taking a brand new 7 series! It had 20km on the clock but I ran it in nicely at 200 on the autobahn!

Vauxhall Crossland X

1.2 litre naturally aspirated petrol with 80bhp

Probably the second slowest car i've ever driven. Why fit cruise control to a car that can't maintain motorway speeds up an incline?

I once got a free 'upgrade' from Sixt whilst in LA. I ordered the smallest, cheapest car (Toyota Corolla I think). Arrived and they told me about said upgrade. "Oh, nice!" I thought, until they gave me the keys to a 7-seater, gas-guzzling Chevy Traverse. Took it back to my apartment (whilst straying in and out of the lanes on the road) and realised it was a bit big for my parking space. It would fit, but I couldn't be arsed attempting to park it multiple times a day without having a personal aircraft marshal.

Phoned the depot where I picked it up, and said "Thanks for the upgrade, but it's a bit too big. Could I just have the car I booked please?". To which they replied, "Err, actually we don't have any of those vehicles available right now, I'm afraid." So, 'free upgrade' actually means 'we've oversold your car'. Great. They made some calls and eventually found a car for me in another depot at the other side town (LA is quite a big place). So I went there, switched the cars, then they had the nerve to try and charge me for the fuel I used to drive that fker across LA. That didn't happen.

I do quite like Sixt though, have used them a few times and they're one of the very few companies who accept debit cards. Not sure if more companies accept debit cards now as this was a few years ago. I don't have a credit card so don't have much choice when it comes to car rental.

From Sixt?
They have a lot of choice there, BUT, PLEASE make sure you take photos and email them to SIXT immediately you’ve got your car in their compound on collection. >30 mins later, they won’t record the car as damaged before your collection.

Oh, and for fuel, don’t take they’re refuelling option. Simply refill at the Circle K on the Airport perimeter road.

(Recently hired from Sixt Dublin Airport and the car looked like it had been washed with an oily rag, had no noted damage, but had TONS of big scratches all over it.)

Otherwise, err, enjoy the craik, as it were....

ETA: Oh, and they charged me EUR34 extra insurance as I was going to Norn Iron
They also wanted me to upgrade my already paid for full cover insurance to reduce my excess to EUR500 from EUR2000
The EUR2000 is still blocked on my MasterCard. I returned the car on 15th August.....

I slammed them on rentalcars.com and in Sixt’s own surveys

You might get a Maserati Levante. smile

OK, I know it's really a Jeep Grand Cherokee, but it's a bit different. The US car rental companies are offering it too.
No Jeep in the Levante, actually quite a good story of a car company actually doing the right thing for it's brand and image despite the cost - https://www.caradvice.com.au/554375/maserati-levan...

So for a bit of a reference point I have paid 156 euros for a lucky dip, my friend has laid 106 euros for a small hatchback. He has been given a Dacia Duster, he’s quite happy.

My experience wasn’t great to be honest. They had a Toyota Corolla for me. I asked for something else because they’re boring and crap. They suggested they could get me a Duster, I pointed out I wasn’t paying 50 euros more for the same car. Corolla was all they had.

Went to find the car, car wasn’t there. Turns out car was in a different space. Car is absolutely covered in scratches and dents inside and out, even had scratches on the roof. Inside is cheap and tacky and beyond basic.

Outside has a massive graze down the side which has gone all rusty. Told the guy I wasn’t happy that there was so much damage on the car and they’d only listed 3 scratches on the paperwork, no dents or rust.

Was told again there were no other cars so I asked to speak to a supervisor on the basis I wasn’t paying for a rusty car (there was also rust on some of the seat fixtures inside).

Anyway, I don’t get to talk to a supervisor because the bloke disappears for 2 minutes and returns saying the manager has upgraded me for free to a Renault Kadjar with no damage.

I was also rather surprised at the sales tactics going on next to me. They were trying to get people to upgrade the cars they’d ordered on the basis that ‘150 euros extra will get you a diesel but you’ll save at least that much on fuel’. Diesel is currently 1.30 and Petrol 1.40.

But the mpg will be better, right. Admittedly unlikely to recoup the difference in a week!

Kind of ironic that if you did drive a Toyota Camry Estate then it wouldn't have had to go anywhere near a garage for repairs.
Why - are they impervious to careless tts rear ending you with their car? If so I might well get one! wink
Did you undertake him then brake like most A4 drivers seem to do on the motorway?

I've used Hertz for years, purely because they offer the Gold Canopy service and I can just walk to the garage and get straight in the car. I don't find them much more expensive than any other mainstream company and bypassing the main counter has saved me so much time!
